Well, if you aren't gonna be playing games, then you don't need a bulky graphics card. You should be able to shell out 100 to 150 bucks and get a card that will suit you fine for pretty much any application (unless you do a lot of photo editing--that is probably more RAM related-- and CAD stuff). Games are what push PC's hard for system resources for the average user. I'd probably go with a Nvidia card, since they seem to be better right now then ATI in this current generation (though i have an old 9600 ATI and haven't had any issues beside it doesn't run my COD2 game very well).
