Default Clan tutorial - creation, management, success! good read

Derived from elsewhere.....

DIn this tutorial, I would like to express and explain to you the pros and cons of both making a clan, owning a clan and leading a clan. I myself am very experienced with many sorts of FPS/TPS clans, and other genre clans, including a few highly successful clans [.sP], [>L*] and [T2K] of the games Socom 1, and Socom 2, [SDG] for Halo 2, [N2A] for NBA 2K5 and [***] a multigaming Xbox 360 community. Though many have lasted longer then others, no clan has failed to launch.

Before you start anything, picture yourself of owning and managing the clan. How would you go about things, how would you manage things? How would you maintain players/members and what is your purpose for creating this clan? For examples; would you be lite, and willing to let anyone play regardless of skill, age, and all for the purpose of enjoyment or would you be bossy and only present to those who show similar interest of purpose and skill? Ask those questions to yourself as well.

One of the most important things of keeping up a clan is to be able to maintain it; which basically means to keep your members happy, and interactive within your gaming community. It is also necessary to build around those who are friends, therefore the structure can be much more solid at the first hand. You are guaranteed to struggle if you can't form a mini-alliance within your friends before you expose yourself to free agency/recruiting.

The Pros of your own clan:

Increase in friends and friendly activities,
Possible to earn a reputation,
Growth of popularity in a game title,
Very exciting, amusing and entertaining.

The cons of your own clan:

Note: Depending on what is your purpose, the process can be extremely challenging or quite easy.

Challenging to maintain,
Very time consuming,
Can be expensive (websites/giving back to the community etc),
Must play online consistently and frequently,
Recruiting may be an issue,
Must call the shots,
Must solve various member's problems,
Must make tough calls including (removal of players, etc),
Can be found in the middle of a major argument.

Now that you have read some basics to clan creation. Read these X number of major steps to both A) create and B) maintain your clan.

All members of all clans all have to have something to do within their community, whether that is playing every other night together or communicating consistently via a forum board for example. Although a website and forum board may be presented later in this tutorial, it is not required to start a clan.

Step 1:

(Optional), Find someone or a group of people who hold the similar form of interest in mind as you do that would like to help lead your clan. This is also known as a "council" and many largely populated clans contain one of these including clan Art of War ( Art of War - Unreal Portal ) and Army of the Republic ( Army of the Republic ). Although these are highly effective in terms of having limited role and less time consumption within the community, it isn't an easy task to set up nor create.

Reasons Why it is a difficult task:
It is very challenging to find similar interested individuals,
It's basically not effective within small gaming communities,
It requires that the individual take the sole responsibility of acting as a leader.

Now that you get a better hint of how your front office can possibly become, we move onto our second step;

Step 2: Thinking of an appropriate clan name, clan tag, and possibly later on clan games.

Clan names and clan tags in a way are very effective in "luring" people to your clan. Some people simply will visit your site, message you or even want to join your clan because they feel that your name presents a form that they like.

Also decide on a list of possible games that your clan could play, it's best that you have support for top populated games, therefore there's always the option for bringing in new recruits. Select a gaming competitive site that includes tourneys and leagues for your selected game. This includes sites such as Gamebattles, NxGamers, TeamComplete, and LiveAssault. Clan matches as they are called are highly successful in challenging the strength of both your clan itself, and the clan's ability to both work like a team and to manage through hard losses, but to possibly improve with tough wins.

Step 3:
Recruitment and Other processes and transactions.

It is highly important that if you are looking to build a clan into a possibly Multi gaming clan or even a 20+ member clan that you have support within your clan. Clans can often fail do to lack of recruiters and possibly never have the option to expand without such processes. Learn to find those who are in need of a clan, but also to find those that are already in your clan that are willing to help.

There are many ways to recruit members into your clan, including;

Word of mouth (simply bring up your clan in a match, and direct your question towards an individual),
Via forum board (simply post a topic, spamlessly if possible, explaining your goal of your clan and what you are looking to work with.),
Through friends(simply talk your friends into joining your clan, very easy on you as a whole to contact, and communicate with them as well to solve any problems if presented) .

Now that you have recruitment down, and in full force, its time you focus on our 4th step;

Step 4:

Now that you are potentially forming a "front office" within your community and also are bringing in those members who will contribute to the every day enjoyment of the community, its time you add to your portfolio for why anyone would be willing to join. This step will refer to practicing . It is very important that your clan as a whole practice weekly, daily, and even hourly if possible. There are many clans out there that don't require skill as a factor in clan acceptance, but there are clans that do. And there are players that require it as well. If you are looking to start an "elite" clan, a clan you feel that can go far and win and move on towards the "creation of a reputation" that we talked about earlier, then this is a key. There are many ways to test the strengths of your prospects (those recruited), but be sure to look for the following;

Besides skill there are many more factors that should be taken into account when "trying out" a new recruit.

Look for personality, will this player be willing to get along with the majority of your other players? Look for the way in which he uses objects, does the player just run around and somewhat exploit the game, to be more clear, does he have any form of variety to his style of play? Look for age, will the player's age come into contact with team meetings and other clan events? Look for philosophy, does the player seem to be on the same page as you and the rest of your team? Does he/she seem as if he/she is doing his/her own thing? Does he/she have the similar mindset as you and your team?

Now that you have a better understanding of how to scout your recruits/prospects, its time you think of a global time for when all members ought to be on and practice via matches, and possible scrimmages. Simply hold a few meetings or two, to find the best possible time for all members to be able to be online at least once every week. This will play a key factor in maintaining members/players as it will keep them interactive within your community, well informed, and as well will create a reason for them to be on; to play.

Step 5:

Now that you have all basics under control and your clan is just underway, its time that you EXPAND This tutorial has been dedicated to help improve those that are looking to expand in many ways, the main way to expand is to go full force into recruiting. For a list of potential forums that bring in prospects, visit here - FPSsource.net // FPS Community ~ View topic - Forum and Site Update 1.2 (TBA) . However, you're focus isn't into expanding your borders, then possibly it can be expanding your reputation as an 'elite' clan. Therefore move to step 7,

Step 6:

What's greatly needed as your clan increases in numbers, is a site. A site is needed for many clan occasions that includes informing the members, introducing more ways for increased interactivity within the community, and gaming breaks. I site itself is very useful and can be created within minutes, no programming is necessary. There are many free sites that allow full support of a community in need of an external commune outside of the game itself. Try checking Freewebs ( Freewebs.com - Free website, free hosting, free webpage, online photo album, free blog, more! ), or Setbb ( free message board - setbb offers free forum ), and other clan affiliated sites. There are many to choose from, start by google searching it! A forum board fits all the necessities of a growing community, including external ways for members to interact, as not everyone is near a Xbox 360, PS3, or other system all the time.

Step 7

As for all the 'elite' clans that I quickly told to skip to step 7, a clan site is absolutely necessary as well, but the focus isn't that high on it at the current time, unless you choose for it to be. Therefore if you have reached step 7, its time you spend your attention focusing on becoming a dominant squad in the supported game that you play. The best way to build a reputation within a competitive community is to present yourself within the site's forums as well as challenge and take tough challenges. You will be rewarded with the wins that you accomplish, and you will learn from the mistakes that you fault to, but whatever you do, DO NOT CHEAT. There is no need to, and doing so will cause you problems possibly in the end. There are many ways to earn a reputation for you and your team, through ways such as great sportsmanship to being a tough and long lasting opponent. Hold your head held high, and as leader of your clan, regardless of winning or loosing, won or loss, present yourself in a productive and professional manner. Doing so will result in possible benefits in the end.

Later steps include; Sponsorship.

Even though there are currently 7 listed steps, there are a few notes that I did leave out.

It is highly important that if you focus on recruitment, that your standards are well placed. Setting your standards too high will possibly cause slow clan growth and expansion. Also give your community the chance to vote on key topics and announcements, and plans for the future. Don't always call the shots for your community, do something "democratically" that will even help keep members happy and the clan well maintained.
