I will be as honest and open here, but again, I stress this is my opinion and I am not trying to change anyone elses, therefore my comments are my own.

Gears of War
Halo 3
COD4
Bioshock
These are all shooters, agreed.
I played Halo 3 Beta, liked it heaps.
I played COD4 Beta, liked it even more so than Halo 3.
I played Bio Shock, like the game, but not more than Halo 3/COD 4.
All are different games, Modern Warfare Shooter, vs, Futuristic Shooter, vs, Bioshock which is kindof like a adventure shooter etc.
But after playing all of these shooters, what do I still play the most online,
its Gears of War.
I knew Gears of War (online) had changed my perceptions of gaming when I was playing COD4 and I was shot and I was on the ground with my pistol and I was calling out to fellow players, revive me! revive me!
Later, when in a area, and having a melee battle with another player, I was pushing B trying to use my chainsaw, but alas no chainsaw!
The third thing that made me realise Gears was the best game, was again, trying to lock myself against a wall or crouch under cover as you do in gears and blind fire at the opposition.
Its these 3 things that I have now grown accustomed too and enjoy in my shooters. Yes I am sure others have varying elements of the above,but gears just put it together so well for online play.
Finally, its the 1 game that after playing other titles, I always kick back for a few grudge matches online on a regular basis, and its the 1 game that has had the largest amount of play time that all my other games put together. Now thats saying something, as to it being my most loved and played Game for 2007. 2006 although I owned Gears in November, the prize went to COD2 in 2006.
I just thought I'd share that.
