Well, personally I'd go for the best speakers possible and a solid reciever if I were on a strict budget. It is entirely up to someone's own perception of the quality. For you, I'd recommend that reciever because it is really well priced and you can still get a substantial set of speakers to compliment it.

The Mordaunt Short or the Tannoy will be very similar quality (what I have found is that MS are a little "warm" for my taste, but it is each to their own) so you could go on aesthetics alone.

Let me put it blunty: 5.1 destroys 2.1 systems. The level of immersion is far beyond what a stereo (of sorts) system can provide. With 2.1 you still have the impression you are looking at what's going on, rather than being in the action. Call of Duty 4 is a perfect example. I tried the game on 2.1 last night (on my 5.1 system) and whilst the bass was still there and it was far beyond what Samsung TV speakers could provide...it still felt flat. Yes, the rear speakers are discrete...but still, I would go 5.1 all the way (7.1 isn't necessary yet).

Positioning speaker systems is always a pain -- especially with a wood floor. Just think about all your options, and sometimes the craziest most creative options work out best!

All the best!
