Pure fiction. For one it's a not complicated game from a rule and strategy standpoint. Secondly, damn near every kid plays the game up until puberty. After that we opt for the sports where strength matters. It's not a game like cricket, where we have no exposure or appreciation. We have all played the game, we have every opportunity to watch and participate in soccer, we just don't like it.
