It's not great. As BK said, no VC hurts things. And there aren't many games that support NWFC yet.
Strikers, Pro Evo Soccer (<--worth looking at), BWii, GHIII (though you're better off getting it for 360), Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and Medal of Honor Heroes 2 all have online worth mentioning. I'm not sure what Geometry Wars online mode consists of. And Endless Ocean isn't much a game, but it does let you coop exploration.
See the full list. Sadly, Tiger doesn't appear to be on there.
Only Medal of Honor Heroes 2 had the sense to ship without Friend Codes, but even it lack a decent messenger, and had no custom communication. And although it was silky smooth online, virtually lagless play in November, it's gotten really laggy in the past 3 months (I'm pretty sure EA is cutting back our bandwidth/server capacity). Lots of serious players have all but stopped playing it because it's so fracking annoying. I haven't played in almost 2 weeks myself for the same reason.
Clearly the console has the ability to deliver online play (it did for several months with MoHH2), but not many devs are stepping up. Add Nintendo's fear of online to the mix, and it isn't great.
I've only had Mario Kart for a couple of days, but it seems to be working just fine. It's relatively easy to hop into a 8-12 player race with anyone or find friends and get into their races. Someone above said Mario Kart online was broken, you'll have to ask them what they mean by that. I didn't get into it with high expectations, but it's managed to keep up with what I expected.
