Microsoft does make loads of money from xbox live. Not just the service itself, but from the marketplace. I would estimate millions of dollars every quarter is spent on something xbox live related. Its insane how people don't realize spending $50 for a year, saves you around $30 or more dollars, than buying it monthly, or even tri-monthly.

A 1 year card +1 one free month once a 1 year = $50
A 3 month card every 3 months for 1 year = $80
A 1 month card each month for a year = $96

So, its cheaper to buy the one year subscription, in the long run.
