I doubt free LIVE is anywhere in the near future. MS did give up on the whole Games for Windows LIVE thing though. PC people just aren't gonna pay for what has always been free.

The price of LIVE may see a drop though. The past couple months, many stores (brick and mortar, and online) have offered the 12+1 month LIVE cards for $30 to $35.
