| Question about blue-ray I have a question about watching Blue ray dvds. I have my PS3 hooked up to my hi-def tv through the hdmi cable. My tv doesn't support 1080p resolution, only 720p and 1080i. Will the blue ray dvd still be in high def or will I not be able to watch it at all. Any help would be great.

The PS3 supports Blu-ray playback at 480p/720p/1080i/1080p.
Although I've heard the latest PS3 firmware update has caused issues with 720p playback - but I'd imagine it'll be resolved quickly.

| umm.. unless they fixed it, wasnt it automatically scaling 1080i down to 420p for some reason?

| Currently on the PS3, you can only watch Blu-rays in 1080p or they are scaled down to 480p.
No 720p support currently (or 1080i) which is a massive shame and a real disappointment. |

As far as I know it only downscales to 480p if 1080i is disabled in the PS3 menu. 720p is downscaled to 480p regardless - hopefully firmware 1.5 (available now) will address this.

| HDDVD is better (same resolution, more options). Its not nearly as expencive either.
I got the HDDVD upgrade for $200, and a subscription to Blockbuster online(many more HDDVD titles than Netflix), and i gots lotsa movies to watch
If anyone who has an HDDVD doesnt have a subscription, id highly recommend getting it. Blockbuster seems to have every HDDVD movie out so far, but only on their online ordering service. Netflix only seems to have a few.

| both blueray and hddvd are pointless w/out a 1080 TV.
i figure HDDVD is better because:
a) is waaaay cheaper (200(hd) compared to 600(br) for consoles, or 400(hd) compared to 1000+(br) for standalones.
b)for cheaper, you get the exact same resolution, and at this time, the pic quality is rated BETTER on HDDVD for many movies.
c) there is more options as far as feature integration in the HDDVDs (PiP pop ups, ect ect ect)
d) nothing sony has done as far as new media types has ever been a big hit (Beta max, mini disk umd, blue ray comming soon) so im not to keen their odds.
e) MS has Peter Jackson on board. that means LOTR will probably only be on HDDVD.. good enough for me!
f) in the end, the only "blueray exclusives" will probably only be movies owned by sony's studio, as the "disk war" heats up. Blue ray is just hyped much more.
g)HDDVD players are automatically backward compatable w/ DVDs.
f)HDDVDs can come in COMBO packs for those who do not have HDDVDs, but want to buy one one day, can buy a DVD thats a DVD on one side and an HDDVD on the other.
h) did i forget to mention that HDDVD's are generally cheaper than blueray disks??
oh yea, what does blueray got on that!?!?? wooo haaa!! hehe..
seriously, what advantages does blueray have exept that for RIGHT NOW there are more blue ray movies
