Posts: 3,920 | £150 Deposit Required for PS3 Preorders In The UK Ha seems PS3 is getting dearer..
Quote from 'gamesradar.com' Quote:
[PS3] Sony wants big money upfront to help genuine buyers
Friday 21 July 2006
UK gamers may have to pay as much as £150 just to pre-order a PlayStation 3 as Sony is planning a new allocation scheme for its 18 November console launch.
The controversial step is designed to make the PS3 launch allocation process fairer and to prevent people from buying more than one console, then reselling them for a profit. Sony is also thinking about introducing a policy that limits buyers to just one pre-order per household, according to games industry publication MCV.
Sony is keen to avoid what happened with the Xbox 360 launch when many consumers managed to get hold of several consoles and sell them on eBay to the highest bidder. Sony believes that the substantial deposit needed to pre-order will discourage those after a quick profit and ensure the limited PS3 stock at launch will go to gamers who really want a console.
Many retailers back the move by Sony, as they believe a higher number of genuine PS3 console sales at launch will result in higher software sales.

Posts: 3,222 | Well that doesn't imply at all that the final price of the PS3 will be £150 more, just that the preorder price will be high (further putting the average punter off). Now, using current exchange rates the price of a PS3 works out at $760. Not only is that a kick in the teeth for us, but also there are only selling bundles for launch, at £545. This is $970...for a games console!!!!!!

Posts: 470 | Thats the minimum pre-order payment. Nothing else. Its a smart idea considering the amount of troubles MS had at launch with their pre-orders, even though Sony has a better production line since they have their own manufacturing shops (MS hires shops when they need them).

Posts: 3,920 | In my opinion its crazy, im not a MSfanboy or anything I want a PS3 i just cant afford one.
what sony are asking is for anyone who really wants there console to pork out another £150( €230 where i am!! ) so they're diehard fans have to suffer to make sure they get there beloved console!
I cant see to many kids or parents for that matter spending over €1000 on a console.

I cant see to many kids or parents for that matter spending over €1000 on a console. | your misunderstanding what their saying. the 150 goes toward the cost of the console, not an extra fee on top of the already high price. It sorts out the serious gamers from the people just looking to buy and make profit. Not that bad of a thing if you can pay the 150 early towards it...

| No im not, Im saying the diehard fans and sony fanboys will be the ones pre-ordering it. And the only guaranteed way of getting it in UK or Ireland is pre-ordering it. (They are usally seriously understocked here.) It just doesnt seem a smart move since alot of people arent happy with the price, and this just adds fuel to the fire even if it is only for a small amount of people.

So that those who really want a PS3 have a better shot at getting one if they pre-order compared to those who are just looking to make some extra cash. Sony has stated for years now (Kutaragi mostly) that the PS3 is only for the hardcore crowd.

That's ridiculous. Sony needs as many people as possible to buy a PS3 or they are going to lose lots of cash...
Kutaragi never knows what he's talking about anyway... |
