Posts: 24 | Mgs4 > Dvd9 Seems like MGS4 will be one of the games, which will take advantage of the Blu-Ray disc: Max PS3 » New Metal Gear Solid 4 Info - News, Information, Games and Reviews for the PS3 Quote:
...Someone managed to meet Hideo Kojima at the Comic-Con in San Diego, and got a whole heap of new information on Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PS3. Below is a copy of the forum post made by the guy who got to met him, so excuse the spelling errors and such:
- No way it will fit on a DVD9. Wouldnt give me a number as how big the game will be. Said he couldnt do that, and nothing is been confirmed as how big the final game will be, cause “there still making it.” But went on about how Sony is pushing HD content and in no way will it be possible to fit it on a normal DVD, and BD is totally necessary for MGS4.(he kept calling it BD) I brought up compression, but he didnt seem like he liked that idea. Forgot what he said. Basically they dont want to do that. I dunno. This lead into a question about resolution...
| Seems like the MGS4 is going to be very huge and detailed

Posts: 1,097 | The only reason it's bigger than 8.5GB is because Sony has some kind of love affair with full motion video. Take all the FMV out of MGS4 and replace it with rendered cutscenes, and I bet the game will barely tap the 5GB mark.

Posts: 825 | something that is 3 gigs on a DVD-9 could be 30 gig on a Blu-Ray. So that destroys that arguement. Also if MGS4 were put on a dvd-9 by MS it would probably be about 4 gigs. Also his not going to compress or even compress alot? no **** it won't fit! All the sounds in oblivion put together are 9 gigs by themselves.
little compression = horrible loading times

Posts: 1,876 | They don't need to do compression because of the space on the BR disk allows for sloppy coding/programing. Of course, he called it "BD", so who knows what he was really talking about.
But, we'll see what happens with MSG4. Maybe it is that big. Or maybe the cell is such a nightmare to program for that you need more than 9gigs to make a decent game. Who knows. |

Who knows. | well in order for a game to run it has to be compressed. If its not compressed it would take a day to load a HD movie. While in a couple seconds a compressed file can be transfered to the cache and then uncompressed giving you the video in a split second.
no compression = very bad

| Even so with those full motion videos, its still part of the game. The fans love these videos because MGS series has some of the best vids in games. Even without those full motion vids im sure the game is going to be long, beautiful, and a blast to play. This is Hideo Kojimas last MGS game and he is going out with a huge bang. Besides The MGS series has done more for me then any other game on the planet, including HALO Series.

Posts: 24 | Alot of those videos were actually real time in the older games, ie MGS2.. You could some, move camera and stuff, during the cut scenes, as a proove. |

Posts: 119 | Hideo Kojima has never used CGI in any of his MGS games. And in a interview with Hideo in Electronic Gaming Monthly says that it was all realtime, which I believe is true. And besides the graphics in the MGS 4 Guns Of The Patriots E3 Trailer are most likely going to get better like motorstorm and resistence, because they have alot of time to improve the graphics, same with every game coming for the PS3.

Posts: 1,227 | The game will fit on a DVD 9. I'm sure sony will use Mpeg 2 for the cutscenes since they use the same thing on their blu-ray movies. While Microsoft uses VC-1 which will cut the size of the file by a factor of 3 and still yield a picture that is better than MPEG 2. Also games like Oblivion which was rumor to be the size of 4 DVD-9s before compression was only 5Gb in size after microsoft was done with it. They also cut loading times by 600%. I think Kojima means in it's present state the MGS4 game won't fit on a DVD-9 since it isn't optimized for the xbox 360 but for the ps3. The coding for the ps3 could be huge for all we know.

Posts: 24 | First of all, source/engine code won't take that much space.. As a programmer I know. Hires textures, especially if the game is very varient in locations and such, will take up alot of space.. the size of the models and scripts, will take up space as well, but the space is not decided by which cpu there will be rendering them.. So the thing about "MGS4 can't fit a DVD because its a ps3 game", is not true.. Any developer person will be able to tell you that..
Second of all, it's not up to sony to decide whether MGS will have prerendered cutscenes.. The blu-ray format is just a media, which contains data.. Doesn't mean it HAS to be video data, if that was what you meant.. |

Posts: 52 | man just because it is ps3 deosnt mean that there is gonna be some catch or underlying fator to it. the man spoke his OWN thoughts about his OWN game but you guys try to dig deeper and discredit him, just because 360 deosnt have a next gen disk format. im not saying 360 will be hightly crippled by not having the extra space, but there deffinitely is a huge possability. |
