Whats your take on these? Are they just another (more official) name for the current skins that you can purchase for the Xbox?
Or are they something more?
Smart move my MS in any event - another way to extract more money from people with the "Official" faceplates

seriously, the xbox lost so much money, but this time they've got it planned out on all angles.

Yeah true - they seem to have learned a lot since the Xbox was released

the original xbox lost so much money on licensing and the actual production of the console, they were in the red the entire time.
they didn't really have any accessories other than the dvd remote that anyone would have wanted.
this time they are covering the expenses by not licensing out all of the hardware to 3rd parties, so they cut down on the overall cost. plus they have plenty of accessories, including faceplates, new xbox live, memory cards, etc.

The faceplates are a pretty cool option, though I doubt I'll be getting any.

I think the face plates are a nice touch. Shore it’s a way for M$ to get many, but so is buying a $600 video card just to play doom 3 a 100 % when you could have played it at 80% with your old video card.
What I’m trying to say is. It’s one more way to make it your own. Make it feel like it’s your, think of it this way. You boat a car and it’s the best car in the world. But every one has the same looking car. So you buy parts for your car and make it stand out and make it your own. The car still runs the same, but the out side appearance is an extension of you
But of coarse u don’t need to buy it. You can just play your games. It’s optional. But I hope they make you pick one for you xbox360 package when you buy it.

Nice comparison CaveMan. Me personally, i'm not all that concerned with customization and the like, so I think I'll pass on the faceplates.

I am pretty excited about the faceplates. I think this is a great way to customize your 360 and also make it visually appealing ( married people will understand). Looking around the electronic industry everyone is cashing in on the customization of products from cell phones to screen savers, Microsoft is playing it smart by addressing this potential for revenue early in the system deployment. Just imagine a faceplate for each holiday...

I don't know about "everyone", as I don't see myself buying one anytime soon. But if someone is giving them away for free, I'll pick one up.

Well, they are struggling to make a profit off of a gaming console. If they do not earn money this time around, what makes you think they'll stay in it a 3rd time around?
I trust you all noted the article on the front page about the multi-colored 360s? If I could get a black one or metallic with a customized face plate, oh happy-joy!

Grindy, i could just see you all tricked out with your metallic 360 and a shweet faceplate. Because if that's true that there'll be metallic, I'm going to be drooling all over it...lol
Also, Bill Gates doesn't own Microsoft, he's the CEO, which is chief executive officer. That doesn't imply he's owner.

well i doubt that Bill Gates really needs the money

It would be nice if you could make your own skin for a faceplate instead of buying the ones they make (the do look nice though). I'll probally buy one 5 months after launch.

a face plate with that image on it for $20-$50
maybe its a big lie but it would be very cool if you could do that
