I agree with Scott, Dance is a retarded "genre", and shouldn't be considered music.

If remixing someone elses song, by adding a generic bass rythem is classed as "art" in your book, I may aswell go and record the sounds of workshop and class it as a "scratched" tune.

You do not need any musical talent, either. My "friend" likes to make his own dance songs by using computer software and hes' the most music illiterate person I've ever met.

Remixing someone elses song DOESN'T create a new song.

Everyone has some kind of talent I believe and those that become deejays have skill in spinnin or producin records :driver:

A synthesizer, or any deejay equipment is somewhat an instrument...it makes music. A pot or pan can be known as an instrument. I know people on the streets that have skill to make beats with simple steel :congrats:

Art, eh?

Evidently you're either not that familiar with electro or you're just adapting a typically ignorant stance on music you don't understand. Not every DJ simply adds a generic bass rhythm to someone elses song. I recommend you listen to DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and Steinski and Double Dee and then come back into this thread. Shadow is a good example of a DJ that does something completely different. Check out Entroducing and you'll see what i'm talking about. To listen to that record, you wouldn't even think a DJ was behind it. It's been covered by percussion orchestras so evidently he doesn't simply add a beat, he creates music.

As for not needing musical talent, of course you do. It's all about keeping the rhythm and the beat. People look at DJs and they assume it requires no skill, but I challenge you to make some great music on the 1s and 2s. It's a lot harder than it looks. Anyone can play a beat, but the same can be said of drums. Drums are the easiest instruments to pick up, but the hardest to master. Decks are on the same wave length.

Way to go using Scooter as an example by the way. That completely reinforced my opinion that you don't know what you're talking about. Scooter is laughed at by most dance fans in all honesty. They're a joke amongst the community, the same way Poison and Skid Row are jokes in the rock community.

I like music that involves a bit more talent than just pressing buttons....

But pushing buttons can sound good: YouTube - Pushin Buttons Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDgetaroZZU)

do they actually play any keyboards or drum machines and sing live then? no i think not, all pre recorded

Some of them do play keyboards, and what are you talking about, drum machines are prerecorded themselves. There are occasionally prerecorded sets, but they wouldn't be considered live. DJs do indeed play live sets. I'd know as i've seen quite a few of them play myself up close.

When we went to see Cut Chemist, he filmed a friend of mine saying his name and where he was from. He then played this on a big screen, added a beat and scratched the **** out of him talking. He used audio-visual software, so basically when he scratched, the screen scratched in time with him. If it is all prerecorded, how exactly was he able to do that in real-time?

Good call on Thievery Corporation fellas, they're great.

What the hell are you talking about? Why don't you go make an electro song right now and get back to us if it's so easy to do. Of course it requires skill. I hate this stupid narrowminded attitude that anything made using decks requires no skill. I mean, are you serious? Like I said to the other guy, go out there and actually listen to the DJs who create their only music. Some of them are fantastic at what they do, and from what i've seen, a lot of them have better timing than many of the 'great' metal guitarists out there.

Do I have to drop some ecstasy to watch DJs perform? That's a ridiculous stereotype. Of course with trance and other subgenres of dance it helps, but bear in mind there are many different subgenres within the dance or hip-hop genres which don't fit that stereotype. It's like saying a classical guitarist is on the same wavelength as a speed metal guitarist. It just doesn't work.

As for being remembered, who knows who'll be remembered in years to come? How do we know the metal genre won't transform into something else?

Relativism should be considered as a central tenet when debating matters of opinion. What one may feel is easy another may feel to be difficult. Who is to say either is right or wrong. In the end does it matter? If ideologies and beliefs are not reciprocated this does not necessarily connote ignorance. If people are to believe spinning the ones and two's requires minuscule talent if any at all that is their opinion relative to their perspective and various other contributing factors. The most simplistic argumentative response would be to request that the individual attempt to do the debated and/or disputed task. In most cases this is effective but far from an absolute.

Music is music is music, folks. Whether it be from electronic or acoustic based sources. I have heard some of the most simple three note melodies come off a keyboard and been like, "damn, I wish I had made that" and I play several acoustic instruments. I love me some Prodigy and Chemical Brothers just like I love Megadeth and Brothers Johnson. Folks don't have to like dance music, but it is music just the same. Here's a good group out of the UK: www.myspace.com/4hero (http://www.myspace.com/4hero)

Thanks Mega Hertz. I am not taking sides I am only pointing out that musical preference is a matter of opinion. Some may say free styling 16 bars with cadence and flow would be easy. I disagree but at the same time I don't care what other people think. If I like it I listen. If i don't I will not bother. Simplicity is a beautiful thing.

Fried admitted to as much. However, it still rings true that music is music regardless, but some music takes more skill than others.

I want you to put forth a well-constructed song that I can listen to, analyse and enjoy. Otherwise don't waste my time with this gibberish. As far as his response lacking depth.. well, so does your music. WAMO!

I agree 100%.It's completely a matter of opinion. Like for all the music that I'm into, Country/Western makes my nose bleed. BUT, there are a lot of people out there who dig it and that's fine. And while I'm not into hip-hop nearly as much as I used to be, I can DEFINITELY respect an artist that's got some serious flow. Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Nas, Mos Def as newer school examples. Big Daddy Kane, KRS-1, Rakim, P.E.; most catz today still can't flow like these dudes did back in the 80's and 90's.

You're right, musical preference is indeed a matter of opinion and not much else, but it's not preference we're arguing here. Sure enough, some people have expressed that the whole DJing thing isn't for them and that's their choice. Though, it is those that dismiss anything related to DJing as requiring no skill or not being a musical instrument that get on my nerves. The same types of people rallied against the electric guitar in the 60s saying the same thing and look how times have changed. It takes skill to play any instrument, including decks, so such an argument is just another example of ignorance in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I would argue the same points if a dance fan was to criticise rock. I think music in general should be appreciated. A lot of the best stuff is the hardest to find. This rings particularly true to dance, electro, hip-hop, trance etc.

I have no interest in this argument, but you've chosen to continually call me out. I've made my points, and I'm not sure how they elude you. I don't care what you listen to. Dance to the sounds of a diesel engine for all I care. My point is that is does not take musical ability to make this type of music. I never said it wasn't fun to go to the clubs and dance once in a while. I would take this type of music over country any day of the week.

Since my points have gone over your head thus far, let me break it down for you. If musical talent is required, show me one college program dedicated to techno. You can study violin, oboe or piano at Julliard, so please show me the Jungle and Electronica program. Maybe I'll go to the Carnegie Institute and sign up DJ'ing 101. I've yet to see a 5 year-old techno prodigy.

It does not take musical ability to perform this music! Mine is not an uneducated opinion. I've been around this music enough to know that of which I speak.

Instead of calling out the one person that makes a lucid point, try going after the idiots who simply say "that sucks" without offering supporting arguments.

DJing as far as making something new from other parts is an art form. Being a record player is not. Mix Master Mike: EXCEPTIONAL DJ. DJ Whats-His-Nuts that spins a record and scratches once or twice and throws in a fancy EQ effect: Not so hot. Maybe that's where some people get confused. I run into DJs all the time in my profession and believe me, some of them have an attitude like they are the shizbang and then I listen to what they do and I am baffled that they get any attention at all. They spin the music that folks like me write and record and think THEY are the hotness. And then some put some stuff together that makes me want to got out and grab some turntables and gear and lay some nasty stuff down.

Why do you let it bother you? It is only an opinion .... Suum Cuique. Opinion, preference, perception, it's all a matter of relativism. As the saying goes in the states, let the haters hate. They always will and they will never go away. It becomes a circular argument and we all know that neither side will concede or capitulate. Has anyone honestly changed their opinion on the matter? Karma still holds true to his perceptions and in all likelihood they will remain that way. The same can be said for Charles (Wrutless). I have adopted the "**** what you think" mentality and it has worked well.

I don't know, Fried. Not everything that takes talent is taught in school. Sometimes the most talented people have no formal education in their field whatsoever because SOMETIMES education can be stilting. Making a GOOD electronica or techno tune takes just as much talent as making a GOOD rock song or a GOOD R&B song or even a GOOD classical composition. It's not about the education behind the music, it's about how it moves you. If the Art of Noise can take the sounds of screeching brakes, chainsaws, and hammers and make people move for decades, I think that takes a TON of talent. And none of them is any sort of slouch as far as musical talent on acoustic instruments. Kraftwerk? TOTALLY electronic and STILL inspiring a generation of musicians (myself included.) Those who fall back on the GENERIC ideas and idioms of that genre are the ones who give it a bad name. But I don't think anyone could say realistically that the Chemical Brothers aren't talented? The Prodigy isn't talented? Mark Mothersbaugh isn't talented?

I've chosen to continually call you out? I've called you out once, maybe twice. Your point, frankly, frustrates me and that's why I am questioning it right now. I just don't see how you can possibly come up with that logic. Perhaps its merely ignorance or perhaps you're that deluded that you can possibly think that multiple genres of music require no skill to orchestrate. I have stressed numerous times throughout this thread that it does indeed require skill to DJ at the right level. There are many lacklustre DJs out there achieving fame and glory, the same way there are many other lacklustre musicians out there achieving fame and glory. Though, as with any musical genre, there are always diamonds in the rough.

Just because there isn't a college program for a musical instrument does not make it any less a musical instrument. The reasons why there are no classes for learning to sample, breakbeat, scratch or cut using decks is because decks are by no means a classical instrument, they were pioneered on the streets, and many DJs are encouraged to use other peoples tracks and play with them. This is not the nature of music, this is not musical creation. Though you could say the same thing about some classical orchestras, as a lot of the time they merely play what was written centuries previously. Though of course there are exceptions. These exceptions are the DJs I look upon with favour. Those who have enough balls to go out there and do their own things. Artists like DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Coldcut, Fila Brazillia, Alan Braxe, Daft Punk, MSTRKRFT, The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy are all good examples of music breaking the mould and the work they produce should be encouraged, because they are not merely playing another person's record, they are creating music.

I'm not going after anyone. This isn't a witch hunt. I'm not interested in people who say "this sucks," because they aren't even remotely intellectually challenging. That's their opinion and they're entitled to it, but i'd rather engage in a healthy discussion than two people merely lambasting eachother.

Karma, I hate to be an ass, and I can't believe what I'm about to say, but I agree with Bionic for the most part (am I drunk?). Now I like trance, trip-hop, and other forms, but I am by no means an expert. So I will not try to lie to anyone and educate others on what takes skill or quote "how things are".

Can't we just appreciate the fact that this is music that goes against the norm, that prides itself on creative freedom and expression, that at least puts forth some effort? If we are going to bash anything, lets bash commerical music for its unoriginality and consistent dumbing down of society.

In case I haven't stated, I don't care. I only respond when addressed or quoted. If it makes you happy, you win. The entire human existance has been building to the day when people that can't read a note of music can scratch up vinyl and consider themselves musicians. We've hit a plateau in our species and can go no further with regard to cultural evolution.

Hey Karm, I know we've "Good Day"d already, but I don't think most DJ's consider themselves "musicians" as much as "artists" and there is a difference. I would consider myself a musician AND an artist. As a musician, one could sit down and recite someone else's written piece(s) and be acclaimed the world over for performing said piece(s) to perfection, but that is still someone else's piece of music. As an artist, I can either create a piece or reproduce a piece in my own style and still in a way call it my own (giving due respect to the original, of course.) Guys like the Chemical Brothers, while doing some sampling of others, tend to have primarily original pieces and I know that quite a bit of work goes into making something entertaining and different. Yes, they can over-use the "Euro-Club" drumbeat, but the music they lay on top of it is deeper than much of what is accepted as good music today. Even Daft Punk who PRIMARILY sample throw in some killer original guitar and synth riffs and make something of their own. That is creative. And I'm not trying to change your position or opinion as much as give you another angle to look at.

OK, here goes.

So yeah a couple months back I met this kid at college who is crazy into producing music. He had MIDI keyboards through the roof, drum machines, vinyl everywhere, record players, etc. Basically the works. He was cool enough to let me borrow one of his MIDI keyboards and using that and a program called Reason, I attempted to create some music.

I didn't create anything umm amazing (surprised?), but this is the best of what I wasted my time on. Give it a listen and tell me what you think. Oh and be gentle.

OK, OK this really is my last post. Bionic Commando, Mega Hertz, Brut and others vehemently support their postion, which I respect. I don't consider any DJ I've ever seen to be a musician anymore than I consider The Rock or whatever "professional wrestler" to be an athlete. Despite my opinion, I'm wrong. This is a thread for the fans of this form of music, and not a debate of the merits.
