did u guys know that it only uses one core. that is freakin amazing to have that good of graphics and ai and physics and on one core. if you watch the interview with cliff on either gamespot or ign then u will know that.

P.S found the link to the cliff vid http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/gearsofwar/media.html

oh yea also i saw the interview with the guys that made call of duty 2 and they are using all 3 cores so yea i don't know.

@ Diamond yea that is true i didn't think about it that way untill like this mornin in the middle of class(yes i think about 360 all freakin day) lol

Remember, it's up to the developer to utilize the hardware properly. If it is using all 3 cores doesn't mean it's using them all efficiently. I imagine the developer of GoW could make very good use of all 3 cores.

I read about that yesterday. It's looking pretty good considering they are not yet taking full advantage of the 360's capabilities. Certainly going to be a must buy title for me.

found the link for the vids and hd new vid is top one under media or whatever, you'll find it http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=1637

OH i read that post wrong daniel lol i was readin it as though u didn't like call of duty 2 lol my bad

They better get it up and running on all 3. I don't want half done games. I fthey can make it better and get it running on all 3, then I'll wait till Christmas 2006. Halo 3 bettter be making use of all three cores. It better make us all pick our jaws off the floor. I want it to hold up after 3 years just like Halo 1 did.

Epic have said that GOW is using Unreal 3 engine.

They have also said that they are developing Unreal 4 engine for future PC and 360 releases.

How good will GOW 2 look ?!?!?!?!?

the final release of Gears of War will maybe consist of (a maximum) of two cores running simultaneously.. The one core now is just for demonstration and developing purposes.. And I'm sure surprising their fans with an added core will greatly favor Epic Games..

I'm pretty sure I read that COD2 runs on all 3, 1 for the graphics, 1 for the AI and the 3rd running the physics.

well not to sound pessimestic, but doesnt the game use all the cores, bit run at a lower processing speed?

the other cpus can shut down to make the 360 sounds lower, reserve energy, and keep the 360 cool.

I'm pretty sure I read that COD2 runs on all 3, 1 for the graphics, 1 for the AI and the 3rd running the physics.

That could be true, but I have read the COD2 could run on only run core, but would require re-coding. They just ported the PC code to the 360, and in doing so, the code is more sloppy and not as efficient, but much faster in development time.

what does "running on one core" mean?

Rubiks14
14-10-2005, 11:25 PM
well you know how the 360 has 3 core processesors. well running on one core literally means that it only uses one of the 3 processesors to do the work

EDIT: ok after watchin that vid again i'm not sure what he meant when he said they are working on things with multicore and eventually bring it into the engine. not sure but do u think that means that what footage of gow at tgs was on one core and that the game will be on multicore when it is done or if it means that unreal engine 3 will be on multicore at some point in time. personally i think he means unreal engine 3 because he said bringing to the engine.

y is it only using one?

cablekiller

y is it only using one?

Well, when writing the code for a 360 game, the developers have to write the code with multiprocessing in mind, which makes it more difficult. If they don't need to run on anymore than 1 core, all they have to do is work in the multi-threading for the 1 core. So in other words, they don't need the processing power of the other cores, so programming the game will be much easier.

If you have seen the videos of the cod2 gameplay then you should know it is going to be a bigger game. Not bigger as in better necesarilly, but bigger as in memory and framerate. The battles are massive and fit up to 50 or more people on the screen so it makes sense to use all three cores. Gow can focus maybe 50% of that 1 core on the graphics and framerate, and the other 50 for the gameplay and ai. Since the firefights in gow are not as big as cod2's that leaves more space. There are also less NPC's on the screen at one time. Overall i think they will end up using 2 or 3 cores in the end, just to make sure there getting all they can out of it.

Yes once games are being written properly, the games coming out in a few years will look truly amazing. Lets hope the do more than make them look great, but play great too.

Ok let me clear things up, pretty much all of the games so far are actually using all 3 of the cores. All in a different way, but in general one will be for physics processing , one for the digital sound encoding and one for the visuals (thats how it can pump out HD res's).

Now even though the 3 cores are utilised to an extent, not all of the hardware threads are used, maybe 2 out of the 6 or 8 available. Now this makes the biggest difference to the games performance. Now the direct pc ported games are re-coded to accomodate the 3 cores but not the hardware threads themselves. So until a game is coded to utilise these we won't see much of an improvement in the visuals, as we have pretty much reached the maximum current graphic technologies can offer, sorry to say it but its true.

So for the next few years we won't see much better than what is about to be launched, in particluar Gears of war and 2 days to vegas.

o dont belive a *** what scot is saying,,, sry to say it scot,, but i think you all allll wrong ,,,, remember,,, the 360 is made to fight the ps3 ,, and then they HAVE to push the visuals to even higher levels,,, so trusst me,,, the games in 2-3 years will look **** awsome!!!...

So people.. you can all continue dreaming about that Unreal Engin 4 couse it will probebly come;)
