Activision has announced today that the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare variety map pack has set a new record for the number of paid downloads on Xbox Live Marketplace - surpassing one million downloads in the first nine days since its release.
The company also reported that in the nine days from April 4 - 12, Xbox Live members played more than 30 million COD4 sessions and logged more than 32 million hours of gameplay.
"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare delivers one of the best online multiplayer experiences ever," said Will Kassoy, senior vice president, global brand management, Activision Publishing, Inc.
"We are excited to be able to expand that experience and deliver to fans a new variety of locations and environments which have all of the intensity they have come to expect with Call of Duty."
The variety map pack is exclusive to the Xbox 360 through April 24, when it will become available for download via the PlayStation Network.
During the weekend of April 18 through April 20, Microsoft will partner with Activision and developer Infinity Ward for a 72-hour sweepstakes with hourly prizes including shirts, autographed posters and Xbox Live point cards. One Grand Prize winner will also receive an Infinity Ward autographed Xbox 360 Elite console and a Limited Edition Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare faceplate, among other items.

That's pretty sad that so many people are willing to spend the money...just furthering developers' faith in selling us stuff that SHOULD have been in the game in the first place!

Stop it! >_<!

I never download map packs if they weren't on the game in first place i don't see the point in spending more money.

No burn! It's just stating the obvious! If anything, it would be a self-burn.

just think of all the good things that money and millions of hours of gameplay could have gone to instead. we could have ended world hunger.

In a perfect worlds they would have had the maps for us after only 3 months and they would have been free, but the game is good enough that waiting is OK. And while it's not uncommon for some developers to provide free maps after a time, its also not uncommon to have to pay for maps. I was burned royally on the Rainbow 6 Vegas Black and Red Map packs.. when I Bought Both Map Packs the same day. Then 48 hours later they announced that the Red pack and Black Pack were FREE. Customer Support would do nothing for me besides only refunding 800 point from the Black Pack which had been improperly posted for download on live for the crucial few hours when I saw it and downloaded........ Anyway Despite being burned on Payed Map downloads, I'm happy with the CoD4 maps so I will not complain about $10 because i know i'll get my moneys worth in play-time.

To each their own. I downloaded the maps and love them. I think they were worth the $10 easily. I'm sure some of you guys have other opinions. And just think, if the maps were released with the game there would be tons of people still bitching about not having enough maps or not getting more maps for download.

I bought them, but I don't think that they should have charged for them.

i can understand charging for them, but they should have been cheaper.

also, i wonder if PC users got them and had to pay. when i played cod2 online al the time, there were shloads of maps...and lots of them actually pretty good, you could download at no charge.

but you can't expect every map to already be on the game when you first buy it. buy releasing new maps, it encourages continuing online play. didn't they release some of the map building tools so customers could create maps and submit them? it might not have been cod4.

Ha! That's such an awesome word! I'm stealing that.

But most people felt there were enough maps. 16 maps is enough for anyone.

What can't be justified: Maps created from the SP campaign being sold for money after the game was released. MONEY GRABBING WHORES.
