View Full Version : Backwards Compatability, How Important?

Thought I'd ask the question as this seems to be the trend for the next gen consoles, all of them letting you play older games from past systems. Do you think this is a very important factor for a new console, is it a must have feature or don't you care if it is backward compatable or not? Post you views and vote in the poll :)
I personally think it is a good feature, but isn't the deciding factor when I purchase a new console. If I'm been honest, other than the odd Nintendo game, I don't really play many of my old titles again, especially with all the new titles getting released on the new console. It's nice to know the option and facility is there, but isn't a big thing for me :)

I'm not going to sell my old Xbox so I guess backwards compatibility doesn't really concern me, but supposing I did, It is a nice feature to have.

Well, I think the same as you Fart !!!
I almost never come back to old games I've already finished! (there's always a new gen game to buy first). And I never bought games from a past gen to play on a new gen system...
I guess sometimes the thought of playing one particularly good old game comes to mind, but minutes later the idea is washed away...
But I do believe some gamers are more nostalgic than I am, so I guess that for them it's important to be able to just have the opportunity to play their favorite old titles for fun just by flinging the disc in their next-gen system...Hassle free...

My XBOX has had a disc read error problem, so yeah for me for the XBOX 360 backwards compatibility is a huge plus. I can finially play the games I have.
When I get a console with backwards compatibility I can either a) relegate the old console to kids room or loft status or b) dump it to save space.
Backwards compatibility is good.

I think it would be nice to have but i dont really need it since i have an Xbox but for those who didint get one before the 360 then i suppose they would want it real bad.

Not necessary, sence I buy all the consoles anyway. Basically, if a new console is backwards compatiable, I'm just happy to sell the first console, and get some extra cash.
Even though the REV can downloas NES, SNES, and 64 games. I can't say that I'll need it, scence I aready have each system and the games I want. I'm certainly not going to sell me old classic systems. :top:

I wanted backward compatability at first, but then I began to realize that once we start playing these 360 games, the majority of us will say to hell with the old ones.

Not needed. If I thought playing older games was important, I would keep the older system around. As is, I am already considering how I will get rid of the Xbox under my TV come Nov. 22.

The only reason for me is to play halo2 until halo3 is released. Don't want to deal with 2 game consoles. Plus the Live environment should be better for halo2 using the 360. I’m also curious if halo2 is improved in any way on the 360. Better frame rate, improved display resolution, etc.

I think it is needed you will get more people to buy the system especially for kids who parents buy them the system they will be more likly to get for the kids, otherwise parents will say why I buy u know system when you have $600 in games we bought for you. So I would say backward compatiablity is crucial.

When the Xbox 360 Comes out, Im still going to keep my Xbox just so I can mod it. Therefore I wont get banned from XBL, cuz I wont be on!!

once i had my ps2, i stopped playing my ps1 games...so I don't think it's that necessary of a feature.

if you really like your old xbox games you should just play them on your old xbox.

Here's a question. Will you be able to play old xbox games on xbox live on the 360?

Yes it is importent to me.
With the room taken up with Ps2,GC,DC,Xbox i have no room for the 360 so it will mean packing the XB away to make room for it. So yes for me it is very handy for backward compatibility.
Just coz games machines move on does not mean you have to forget the great games of the previouse generation. best of both worlds.
I still play ps1, MD, Sness ect games. Why? as I am a gamer who loves to play games and if i enjoy them i will play them no matter how good or bad they look.
Sonic the Hedgechog (sp) is still a great game which i love playing same witth many other older games.
Luckly I have now packed my MD away as I can play MD games on my ps2 thanks to AR max vo edition.

To be honest for the 360 its essential as there are lots of good Xbox games coming out during and after the Xbox launch and I will still want to play them. Plus people get cravings for classic games and now that every console is backwards complatible it will be easier to solve those cravings, rather then having to unbox another system from the attic etc.

Backwards compatibility is a very important feature in my opinion becuase there may be some people who still want to play their Xbox 1 games and won't want to keep the Xbox.

I actually voted "No, it's not important at all" on this one. That's my personal view of course.
I've have had a GB and GBA SP...never played any of my old GB games on my GBA. I've had a PS1 and a PS2...never played any of my old PS1 games on my PS2. I've got an Xbox and will have an Xbox 360. Again, I just can't see myself playing my old games on my new console.
For me, the arrivial of a new console marks a new beginning. It's time to wait for Halo 3, Forza 2 etc., and it the meantime, play great games like PGR3, PD0 etc. while we wait.
However, I can understand why some people might want it, but I seriously do question just how much the feature gets used versus the effort made to make it BC.

i wouldnt say its quite crucial.
but its very important. if it wasnt b/c at all, i wouldnt see the point in buying any games from like june past for the xbox, as you wouldnt be able to play them after december!
i think all newish games should work on 360

I don't have an xbox. BC is the reason I just reserved my 360 today, and picked up Halo 2, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and Ninja Gaiden Black!! I can't wait to pick up my 360 next month!!

very nice feature to have but I would sacrifice it for a better console in a differen't field. Thats why i'm glad they are using emulaters.

Why do we need backwards compatibility? Its like extra icing on a large cake. Do you want to be playing Halo 2 when there is Halo 3? I would want to play the Xbox games on the 360, but lets face it do you really want to play current gen games on a next gen system?

good point, but people who can't afford Halo 3 or just want to make some use out of their old games this will work out wonderfully. Mostly because it will take not take any hardware to do it. Only memory on your HD which is over 2x the memory of the xbox 1s harddrive.

If you don't already have an xbox, it makes getting the xbox 360 even better!!! There are already a lot of great games for the xbox that I'd love to play, but I'd rather not pick up an xbox and have already reserved my 360. For all who already have an xbox I can understand how you feel about BC, but for me, this was one of the key selling points in waiting to purchase a 360.

I voted for the middle one. Some people don't need backwards compatibility.

backwards compatability does nothing for me, ive never put a ps1 game in the ps2,so i aint starting now, i suppose its important if youve already got an xbox system with alot of games, but honestly i cant see anyone playing em

I don't even care about it. I'm never playing an old gen game again once the 360 is in my room.
