Rate the last movie you saw out of 10. It doesn't matter if it was at the cinema, on DVD/Video or on TV, if you've seen something recently let us know what you thought about and give it a scoring out of 10.
I saw The Island yesterday at the cinema and althought the reviews haven't been brilliant I found it a really entertaining sci-fi moving. It had a decent plot with a moral to it (a little like I-Robot). There were some really great action scenes and there was the usual copious amounts of CGI present, which lent to some great effects during the movie. I thought Ewan McGregor was fantastic throughout the movie, however I didn't really get into Scarlett Johansson's character. Still I found it an entertaining sci-fi movie and worth a watch even if it's only on rental when it's released.
Rating 8/10

The last movie I saw was Wedding Crashers. While parts of it were funny, it was too predictable and cliched for it's own good. The red-head was incredibly hot, though :top:

Saying that a movie gets "8/10" without explaining why defeats the purpose of rating it- it needs a reason to get that rating. Try to bear that in mind with future reviews.
Okay then. I saw Batman Begins. This movie did more justice to the Batman saga than any other Batman movie before. It has a deep history for Bruce Wayne, you understnad his character better and why he became Batman. Alfred, played by Michael Caine, brought new vigor to the otherswise dull character. Morgan Freeman brought a certian levity to the film with his jovial persona. The plot was better than average, though the guy who played ScareCrow was superb with his slightly neurotic stance. In my opinion, the biggest flaw of the movie was Rachel, played by Katie Holmes. She does not come off as an "assistant DA" by any means. And why does she have to talk out of the side of her mouth? True, she is a nice visual treat, but beyond that, an actress incapable of protraying someone of legal authority.
Grindstone give it 9 out of 10 possible points. I saw it 3 times. Buy it on DVD.
War of the Worlds was a classic redone to fill the summer blockbuster void, unfortunately, it failed. Not that it was a bad movie, because it wasn't, but it should have incubated a little longer. People who watched it said it was Independence Day with a marginal twist- instead of a computer virus... The Effects were done very well, but I often wonder why Spielberg needs an excess of light in his films (see Minority Report, A.I., [ibid.], etc.). I thought the film was good overall, the acting done well (especially when Cruise beats down Tim Robins, one less Hollywood liberal is a good thing), but it was missing something internally, and I haven't quite put my finger on it yet.
Grindstone gives War of the Worlds a 8 out of 10 possible points. It is most definitely a rental, maybe a keeper.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a fun flick. It was not as cute as the original, as this version more closely aligned with the book, so this movie was a little darker. As I understand it, Tim Burton didn't do anything without the permission of the Dahl Estate (author's family).
This was another decent movie over the summer. The Candyland area looked edible- I wanted to be there. And the fact that they trained 26 squirrels to crack nuts, no CGI whatsoever, was pretty impressive. Johnny Deep, whom I've enjoyed since the movie Nick of Time, was very eccentric (not too hard a role for him). At first you get these Michael jackson vibes from him, but once you figure out he really doesn't like kids much, you start to like his character more, in a creepy way. The Oompa-Loompa's are *shudders* definitely creepy. All played by the same character, I wanted to grab a shotgun and clean house on them. Anyway, the movie is still good, although it is nothing terribly new either.
Gindstone rates this movie 7.5 out of a possible 10 points. Get it and watch at your liesure.
Transporter 2 was supposed to be the movie I looked forward to the most. I own the first movie, and it is a definite guy flick. The sequel had so much potential because Jason Statham is too cool for comparison. But, as it were, the plot and action were subpar. The plot was nothing new, and it didn't ahve to be. It was the action we wanted. Instead we get this incredible scene about a car bomb which, although 'Frank' is an excellent driver, it is still a little hard to swallow. That aside, the final fight scene against the main bad guy is impossible to believe. The G forces would not have permitted that kind of stuff, nor the mach 2 crash into the ocean. What is really aggravating is that some of the same killer fight scenes in the first movie were "transported" into the second, so you get the same sequencing all over. Also, the main bad guy is an excellent kendo fighter, so you would surmise that he and Frank would duke it out, sword style. No dice.
There was a nice foot chase scene and the fight scene with the hose was pretty good, but overall, I left the theater a bit miffed.
Grindstone gives this movie a 6 out of 10- solely based on the fact that Jason Statham is that cool. Rent it, but make sure it wasn't you who rented it.
I will rest for now.

I saw Sahara as well, and Penelope does has a nice butt.
I am surpirsed that this is the first Clive Cussler movie. He's been writing books about Dirk Pitt for some time and I've read a couple of them. Anyway, the movie is good, but not great. Steve Zahn helps make it a better movie and Penelope detracts from making it a great movie (don't get me wrong, I like many actresses, but there are a few who should not play certain roles) and casting Penelope Cruz as a doctor doesn't work in my book. If you watch the extra fotoage and 'the makings of', you'll hear her talk about other physicians stating she was perfect for it. Well, there you have it, doctors can't diagnose convincing acting skills.
I digress. Sahara is a believable movie to a certain extent. But it ultimately fails to impress. And leaving millions of dollars in Confederate gold with potential warlords is not a good ending, in my opinion. But, then, Dirk's character isn't about money, so that is true to form for him. Also, telling the audience that Steve Zahn and Matthew Mc... are supposed to be ex-Navy Seals doesn't come off very convincingly either.
Grindstone gives Sahara a 7 out of 10 possible points. Rent it, but get popcorn too.

Boys on the beach.
8/10.
I didn't catch the full thing, but from what I saw it was very entertaining. It was a French film about teenage boys filming their holiday to the beach. Of course, at the beginning their personalities are typical (let's get birds). But once they all start to open up, we see that each of them has differing distinctive personalities. The dialogue emphasizes this. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I watched Serenity yesterday. It was worth the $5.75 matinee price I paid.
There is no star cast, so it was rather weird to not see anyone I completely recognized. Sure, the guy who was a pirate in Dodgeball was in there. And then that other guy who was the weapon fanatic was there, but really, no one to steal the scene.
The plot was pretty good. There is this chick named 'River' who becomes psychic and learns the awful truth about a dirty secret the Alliance has suppressed from the general public. But, she is also a trained weapon and moves like Jet Li to disable her opponents. Of course, there are some good fight sequences, not only with her, but the assisine as well, who is played by a guy that reminds me of Lawrence Fishborn in the Matrix. You would expect that the two would eventually met, but that doesn't happen. Still, it doesn't detract from the overall movie experience.
The movie had a Freelancer appeal. I liked it. But the movie also played out kinda like Anime, but watered down. If you look deeper into the movie, you'll begin to release that the Reavers will not be around forever, as they are not multiplying. They are limited. Also, although the Alliance did this dirty secret, bringing it out into the public, in my opinion, is not a good idea as you are just going to bring a potential war into play and ultimately cause more death than good. But, that's just me.
Nonetheless, Grindstone gives this movie a 8 out of ten points. See it, but do a matinee.
