It depends. If you read the front page of this website, you'll note that 20th Century Fox has jumped on the bandwagon for Blu-ray, which means that HD-Dvd just became less attractive since MGM is owned by Sony and also supports Blu-ray.

A standard Dvd holds about 9 gigs of info. Halo 2 used 3.5 gigs. I understand that ES: Oblivion will be larger than that, but still not near 9 gigs. The question is, will a gaming console need a HD-Dvd player, and how fast will this new technology catch on? It may never actually be used in developing a game for these next consoles, but it may be used for movie Dvds... but when? It took 5 years for the standard Dvd to become popular. How fast are people going to buy a new [and expensive] Blu-ray or HD-Dvd player to watch movies?

As for the HD-Dvd player being an "attachment" to the Xbox 360... no idea, nothing has been mentioned yet.

well, considering next gen games will soon have to compress data onto the standard dvd discs, and there's a limit on how much you can compress (i think it's 1.5x, but i'm not sure) then there's a little problem.

you will need to upgrade, and considering we don't know how much space 3rd gen. games will need on the discs, it's safe to assume that hd-dvd will play a big part in the latter part of the xbox360's life.
