Surround Sound & Xbox live?

I'm a newbie when it comes to xbox live. I've had an xbox since it first came out but never got online. With the 360, I while be going gold. So I apologize if this is a retarded question. When you are playing live, is the only thing you hear through the headset? Do you just hear the voices? I have 7.1 and I hope that I will still get surround sound even when I'm online.

You will only hear other player's voices through your headset.

Yeah the games sounds will be on the surround speakers, the headset is purely for communication purposes.

DD 7.1 and 5.1 work out nice in fps's like halo
