I like the 4th choice :) I want Vertical but my entertainment system and my unpotty trained dog say horizontal.

Horizontal. It is working fine. No errors, no disc scratching. Wider base = more stable. I have 3 kids and a dog.

Vert, looks better that way

I am wondering what errors and problems people have with the 360s and in which waythey are using then Vertical or Horizontal.

I think that would be interesting to see.

horizontal because of space

I havent had any problems yet and mine is vertical, hope everything stays cool for now. I guess the heat thing is somewhat on my mind but I just have a fan blowing on it and seems to help out a lot.

I also stand mine vertically without a assisted stand and I don't need one either. I'll spend the extra money on more games.

The disk falls out while your trying to get it in when its verticle. I have mine horizontal cuz i heard it has problems verticle. Probably just a rumor. I have no room to stand it up.

MS really pushed the vertical position, and it is designed to look better if standing up, but the vent on the bottom really makes me wonder, i know it can vent through the holes in the side , i just am curious if there will be any overheating issues in the near future

@ jt_mares

You are right.

There was a post on this board somewhere where they linked to a company that took the 360 totally apart. the CPU is at the rear of the unit on the bottom if it is standing vertically. (Why would you want to block the vent holes on the bottom for the sake of looking cool?)
I agree it looks KiLLeR standing up Vertically! But for the money I spent on the Games @ $60 a pop and the Premium package with Games @ $699 My unit will lay Horizontal with a fan blowing air accross the vent holes at all times of it being on.......

I'm just paranoid like that. Once all the releases are done and all the 360's are sitting on the Store Shelves then maybe I will go Vert again, but who wants to risk the heat issue then have to send your 360 in for repairs and get it back 6 weeks l8r! OUCH!

jt_mares
02-12-2005, 04:49 PM
it would be cool is ms came out with some sort of vert stand that lifted it up just enough for better ventillation, they most likely wont since they haven't already but i can hope.

Well it has to be Horizontal or else it won't fit in probably the smallest space possible to put a 360.

korphaeron
02-12-2005, 07:06 PM
Horizontal. Mainly due to the fact its lying on my bedroom floor since I aint cleared it a space yet :P

Doughboy17
02-12-2005, 07:21 PM
vertical cuz i pla to put the ps3 right next to it on the same desk thing like that way saves space plus i really gotta admit horo with a hardrive looks kinda odd

02-12-2005, 08:04 PM
well, i have mine vertical because i have no space to put it but to the side of my tv. I've heard rumors that it scratches when horizontal, but these are rumors afterall. I've tried it bolth ways with no problems.

ChiTownPlayer

Well at least Microsoft gave you a choice. I mean the old Xbox was one way and that was it. I can see the selling point for space. As I have heard that the Xbox was to bulky and tool up to much space and this slim and sleek Xbox 360 can be vertical or horizontal and still play.

How about diagonal :questionm

You do realize that M$ designed the machine to be vertical? Where did you hear that the vent for the cpu is at the bottom when standing up? I know almost all the problems I heard with the machine (mostly scratches) was people who had their machine horizontal.

Check this link out http://www.planetxbox360.com/?view=article&article=567 A beta tester explains how to crash your 360, he goes on to state....

"Moving your 360 during gameplay may lead to the scratching of discs."

"Playing of console horizontally is not advised and could lead to scratching of discs."

Just an FYI...

you people are talking crazy talk, the system was designed as a vertical system that you could lay hori if you wanted to (only because entertainment centers dont favor vertical hardware). If it was a venting problem when standing vertical microsoft would not showcase the system at every single game expo in the country with it vertical. Every demo they held, E3, and even the xbox 360 lounge they always have them vert. Also take a look at the kiosk that were shipped out(which run for many hours on end every day) they have the system vert and 3/4 surrounded by plastic.

I am willy to bet that the majority of people who are having the overheating problems have their 360's stuffed in an Entertainment Center with the power supply right beside or behind it. Maybe even have it sitting on top their reciever, dvd player, etc..

L.M

Horizontal gets a tiny bit more if not exactly the same amount of ventilation as Vertical

but Horizontal especially with DVDs can have you ending up with a scratched CD

I have finally finished my prototype (Vertical Cooling Stand) and painted it Black Matte to match my Entertainment center.
I will post a link to the pictures a little later today - I have to finish Christmas shopping right now. I only spent 4 hrs on it - so it isnt the most special looking - but blends into the background of my center so it's very functional and not sticking out.
It is pretty cool and I suggest that those who want to keep there units Vertical consider making one! For those who are worried about it tipping over - on my mod I have attached 3 points of contact with studs so that it will not tip over left or right and one in the rear to keep it from slipping off at the rear. ( it has 3ea 3" fans blowing air into the bottom of the unit) With the 360 off you can feel the air coming out from the top of the unit in front of the hard drive and the vent holes on both sides as well as the rear of the unit. This is the best way to push cool air through the unit with out modifying the unit itself. I have a 7500 rpm CPU fan 12v that I was going to mount at the front of the hard drive as it fits perfect - but with the DVD drive being right there on top of it - I didn't want to suck DUST directly near the laser lens. At the bottom the way the internals sit inside the 360 - this should not be an issue at all as it is directed around the rear of the unit because of the drives enclosure!
When I finish my own custom final one over my Christmas Vacation - I plan on bondoing the front of a skull to the front of the unit with it's jaw (mouth) open for ventilation and running red Neon under the bottom to give it that errie glow effect.
Similar to this PC:

http://img284.imageshack.us/my.php?image=skullpc1to.jpg

It's pretty sweet and not noisy as I mounted the fans on top of weather stripping to absorb any vibration.

I will post the pictures later! (remember not fancy yet - just functional)

If you guys look at the kiosks, and they way they are standing vertical. The unit itself is is sitting on four ea plastic peices that lift it up about a half of an inch. So if horizontal scratches the discs (allegedly) and vertical makes it too hot. What the heck are we supposed to do? I personally was planning on laying mine horizontally because it was going to be sitting on top of a speaker, but now i dont know what to do, And thats if I ever get my "second shipment" that will never get here.:Puke:

Heres the Vertical Pics I promised - Sorry so late :

Note the Cooling Stand. If I can get my buddy to make the mold for me I will try to mass produce and sell on EBAY for 360! I can custom make for now if the price is right - but simple to do yourself!

Here is the pics of the Cooling Stand that I made for mine. Has 3ea 3" fans all pushing 62 cfm each! Woot Air is being forced out all breathing holes and running COD2 for 5 hrs straight - No Prob with only minimal heat from the 2 internal rear fans!

Horizontal especially with DVDs can have you ending up with a scratched CD

I have played many DVD's on it and there have been no problems whatsoever.

i had mine vertical until it froze up on quake 4 a couple of times now its horizonal and hasnt froze since. i could feel more heat on the back of the unit also when it was vertical, not as much now that its laying down. lay it horizonal, take a lighter and put up to the bottom that it sits on and see how much air gets sucked in. mines laying horizonial till i make somthing up.

you could also use a usb cooling pad for labtops they have 3 fans on them and you could hook it up to the usb ports in the front and it would run when the sysetm is turned on. just and idea.

How do you put the games in when its vertical, dont they just fall out??

jt_mares
07-12-2005, 03:30 AM
nope its desinged with lips at the bottom (if stood vert) of the tray that keeps it safe till its in the console, nothing new they have them on ps2's just a little extra plastic

No problems having it vertical here, and the disc hasnt fallen out (and i've used it plenty of times)

L.M
07-12-2005, 04:53 AM
ok i want to put this into perspective for everyone

i have my 360 vertical, and all these problems about 'my disc scratched cause its vertical' or even 'my 360 overheated after playing it for 2 hours'. I left my 360 on for 2 days, 48 hours, it froze once in PGR3 but that was when i was quickly skipping through the menus.

Im sorry but to those who say it overheats to easily, maybe it does but mine seems fine, oh and not even a single scratch on any of my games, i have like 6 or 7 now and they are all as they were when i opened them

So i think the 3% faulty is being over exaggerated by many

jt_mares
07-12-2005, 02:21 PM
i never noticed, i dont have a ps2

well me either but i played them.

yeah i have used the 360 in both positions, have not noticed it being any hotter onve way vs the other, and my discs are still scratch free

Eilujin
07-12-2005, 09:03 PM
I think the biggest problem with the scratching of the discs are people moving the console with the discs in them..

Ogio
07-12-2005, 10:49 PM
If you place your hand behind the system you can feel the heat coming off it, I think the overheating problem is mostly people having the system closed in an entertainment center with no place for the heat to escape. And if they are bold enough to put the power brick behind the system in the entertainment center look out, over heat central

I did it too, A nice scratch right around my PGR3 disc... I heard that noise and went WTF!
Luckily for me I went to exchange it at my nearby EB store where I bought it and the guy at the store thought it was a defect with the machines over heating that caused the problem. I kept my mouth shut and gladly got my brand new copy of the game.
