Hard Drive for Live?

Im getting the core system, and i was wondering if the hard drive was needed to connect to Xbox Live on the Xbox 360. Does anyone know, cuz i cant get a hard drive, cuz they havent been released yet. can someone help me?:hello:

You will need either a memory card or hard drive to store your Live profile on.

Actually i think i read somewhere that you have to have a 20 gig haard drive to store your profile and downloads
