I have 6 things I want to see in Oblivion which will aid the atmosphere of the world greatly.
#1. Sinking to the bottom of a lake or river if you are carrying too much weight to swim. I Love Morrowind but I just hate seeing my Character with 190+ pounds of Armor and Weapons on him as well as an Inventory of items that can easily be 100 to 200 pounds more, just jumping into the water and swimming across like a swam. He should sink like a brick and be forced to strip off gear and drop it on the bottom of the river or lake. Then you would have to swim ashore drop some gear and make a few trips back to the bottom of the lake/river to recover your gear. This would make people respect the environment they walk in and give added reality to the world.
#2. Rivers in the game, Give the rivers a current that sweeps Items, Bodies, and untethered boats away down stream. This way a river could be a real living part of the environment. As well as having a use in some quests. I'm thinking mabye you get an assasination contract where the dark brotherhood wants someone dead...but for it to look like they just left town. So you have to kill the mark with a blunt weapon (no blood splatter) and steal their clothes and toss the body and clothes all in the river to sweep away the evidence. Mabye another quest to cut a rope tethering a boat to sabotage a fisherman or ferryman?
#3. Food & Sleep, Please add a nourishment meter and sleep meter to the game, I want to be required to eat food and get sleep, in order to stay at full strength. Having a masterfully detailed world and then never having to eat or sleep just totally breaks the atmosphere. It would really add to the game by making you carry some food rations with you and mabye carry a bedroll with you so you can sleep in the wilderness rather than having to come to an Inn every night. You would need to add some form of accumulating stat damage per hour when you start to starve or become highly exhausted from lack of sleep. I can easily see a quest where you have to carry 100 pounds of food to some besieged forts soldiers. Or have to stay awake for a LONG time getting exhausted then having to fight a battle. There could also even be an expensive potion that satisfied your need for food & rest, for those times when eating or sleeping would be tough, such as deep in a monster filled cavern, or when you have to walk to a distant city on a deadline.
#4. Clothing and Shoes. I want to see cold damage from traveling in snow and ice without wearing a Robe, Cloak, or Shoes/Boots. In Morrowind you could pretty much run around in nothing but pants and never take damage unless you were drowning or hip deep in lava. I'm Really wanting to have the game require you to wear something warm to avoid some temporary stat damage. Mabye even add in the ability to stack up some pieces of wood and start a camp fire? which would let you unroll your bedroll and sleep next to it in icy/cold environments. A campfire could cut both ways by mabye keeping some types of monsters away and attracting other types.
#5. Hiring Mercenaries/Body Guards to travel with you for a limited period of time. You could easily add this into the Fighters guild. Mabye have differnent levels of Hirlings with different prices? 100gold for 24 hours to hire a level 10. 500gold to hire a level 20 for 24 hours and 1000gold to hire a level 30 for 24 hours. something like that. they would travel with you overland but would avoid natural hazards like falling off cliffs or drowning in lakes and would fight at your side, until the 24 hour contract expired then they would travel back to their guild hall. Also you would have to make them refuse to enter dungeons so that people are not abusing them to accomplish all the quests. and mabye have a LARGE cash penalty if they died while under contract to you? something like. the guild officer saying to you...."the last mercenary you hired died so you have to pay us the 5000gold penalty before we'll hire out to you again.
#6. Traveling People. I want to see people travel from town to town. in the form of lone travelers walking on foot or riding horses, Or A trade Caravan that travels a loop between a few towns. the Caravan could be an awesome part of the game you could mabye hire on as a body guard. or join up with some bandits to ambush it. The caravan could roll into a town, then the merchants will walk from store to store selling/buying and mabye even spend a night at an Inn. then they return to the caravan and they travel to the next town. Also I want to see soldiers patrolling the roads as well as small groups of bandits setting up ambushes along the roads. it would be utterly amazing to be climbing over a ridge and look down to see a few bandits hiding behind trees and boulders. then to look over and see a patrol coming down the road. so you stand there to see what happens....the bandits jump out and fire some arrows at the patrol which then attacks the bandits...and you can stay back or jump in to aid one side or the other. and hopefully you have some way to distinguish yourself as aiding the Guards rather than being a bandit..
It may be too late for these ideas to be put into Oblivion....but mabye just mabye... they will become popular and make it into Elder Scrolls V......
