They use Beta kits to see how the software runs on a functioning Xbox 360 (well, functioning at about 90%). It gives them a good idea about how the software will perform on a real Xbox 360.

If you saw the mop-head kid in the barren apartment room playing Halo 2 on Xbox 360, that is a beta kit (note the additional wires on the top of the console).

great post grindy!

a beta kit is just what he said, about 90% power of the final pack.

the first beta (there are 2 versions) is basically a powered-down gpu (400-450MHz) and a powered-down cpu(i.e. instead of running @ 3.2GHz, it'll be running at about 2.9)

this is just basically for the developers to get used to the final hardware before making the jump to the final development hardware (i.e. the 2nd beta).

no problem. if you have any questions about hardware stuff that hasn't been answered, i'd love to answer it and there are other people more than capable of answering. so feel free to ask away! :)
