well i found this article about the xbox360 units having hd dvd drives in 2006, and how MS is making the last preparation for the change...sounds too good to be true

Remember all that talk about future Xbox 360 revisions possibly including an HD-DVD player as standard? Today, Japan's Jiji News service reports that Microsoft is planning such an update for as early as next year!

According to the Jiji report, Microsoft revealed on the 14th that it has entered final stages with Toshiba and other HD-DVD backers on the development of an HD-DVD capable Xbox 360. The company is looking into the possibility of releasing the updated version of the hardware next year, although such a release won't happen until after Spring.

Microsoft has yet to respond to this story. Previously, Microsoft Japan representatives have suggested that HD-DVD will be a part of the Xbox 360's future, albeit for movie playback only.

They'd have to sometime soon, esp with the 'supposed' launch of the ps3 around the corner.

I think will definetely need it to compete properly with the PS3

I for one will not be gettin another 360 just for a hd dvd drive. Ms should of had that damn drive in all 360 before it launch.

all it would do is play movies so for me its useless. When the new mediums come out I'm supporting Blu Ray anyway. I like the disc better due to its larger volume and greater ability to support multiple audio's and non compressed video. But again as far as gaming goes its irrelevant. you dont need HD DVD. So unless you are wanting it to watch movies why worry. They already said if they added it that it would NOT be for games, only movies.

i agree with the two posts above me... hd-dvd isn't needed for games... not yet anyways. i think developers will have better compression with time. Anyways i think BluRay has the upper hand in the next gen dvd video format war anyways with all the studio support and bigger space. the 360 doesn't need it to compete with the PS3 and its upper hand IMO are the games and Live
