Microsoft has cleared up speculation regarding possible HD-DVD functionality in future versions of the Xbox 360, saying that it currently has no plans to release an Xbox 360 equipped with a next-generation DVD player.
The unusually direct statement is a straightforward denial of a report from a Japanese news service yesterday, which claimed that the company planned to launch an HD-DVD compatible Xbox 360 in 2006.

The flat out denial is probably their attempt to keep people from waiting to buy whatever comes next. Plus wouldn't it have to be an external add-on since it'll only be used for movies?

MS is right in that the next disc medium will probably be the last and in the future things will come over the net. Besides I really dont care, I didn't want their to be HD DVD and Blu Ray. sorry but I like blu ray better from an HDTV perspective, bigger disc, bigger capacity, meaning little to no compression on movie transfers. But thats just my opinion on the movie end. As far as games go we DONT really need those big capacity discs. So dont sweat it. If something takes up more than one DVD they can just make it a 2 disc game. No big deal

I think Microsoft is waiting to see which way the stnadard is going to go for the DVD. They do not want to jump one way and then have to turn the other to get systems to the standard.

Does it really matter?

That's what I was asking.

Hmm, well, I've been through this discussion before over at Joystiq, but suffice it to say that HD-dvd wasn't ready for launch and therefore wasn't implemented. Blu-ray is owned by Sony and was not even a consideration for the 360. The dvd-9 is plenty of storage for the next few years (e.g., Half Life 2 took up 3.36gigs of info). With compression and procedural synthesis, data will be easier to code and compress for storage on a dvd-9. But, in any event, why put an HD-dvd drive onto a console when it has become apparent that Blu-ray will be the victor at this point (most support)? If dvd-9offers enough storage space, the HD-dvd goes the route of the dinosuar, would you really want the extra cost feature?

And, looking at the alternative, how many here want to buy a new Blu-ray dvd collection at a higher cost, instead of downloading the movie from the `net and watching on your TV? Give me an inexpensive, but high quality High Density Hard drive capable of saving ~80 movies and I'll be good to go.

Good point.

In any event, with the PS3 coming out with Blu-Ray, I think this issue is crucial in terms of how well the 360 does.

Would have to wait until some standalone HD-DVD players come out before we know if it would be worth implementing it into the 360.
