When I learned that the XBox360 would not ship out of the box with HD-DVD I was quite disappointed, especially given that the PS3 will come with Blu-Ray.

There have been rumours that they will release another version of the console later with HD-DVD, but I dont like that idea TBH - it basically forces everyone to pay for another console.

Whats your view? Did MS screw up big time by not including a next gen media format?

Not sure if it's a mistake or not. The problem is the more you add into a console feature wise, the more it' going to cost to produce and this is then passed onto the consumer with higher product costs. The other thing is how many actually use a consoles DVD playback feature? Again is it worth including if it's only going to be used by the minority of gamers.

Yeah, maybe I am getting caught up in the hype surronding HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

Only time will tell ;)

With the Hard Drive being removable wont it be a case of buying a new drive? not the whole console!!!

We are talking about HD-DVD - its a next gen Media format competing with Blu-Ray to take over DVD.

i'm sure that the 360 supports hd-dvd, and you can probably get it in replacement of the dvd standard you have in the console.

but standard dvd is cheaper, is perfectly suitable for next-gen, and it keeps the xbox360's cost down. with hd-dvd, the 360 would be more than likely priced around 349 or possibly 399 bucks, but without it, we're looking at 299.

I was disappointed as well. But I also understand the conundrum associated with adding it; will HD-Dvd be the future or will Blu-Ray? You obviously do not want to add a potentially useless feature. I would hope that you could easily replace the standard Dvd with an upgrade, but I doubt it is that easy, although buying a new Xbox 360 is not a favorable reality either.

Nonetheless, standard Dvd should be fine for the next 3-5 years of the consoles life as most games are only using about half the storage capacity of a dvd. I expect that to grow, but at the same time, I would not have any qualms over a 2 disc game if it came down to it.

It's funny. DVD was a smart move. 1St think of how much the game disc will cost! 2nd most game companys will have to by all new machinces to write the blu-ray disc. 3rd that would be hard for crossover gamesmakers like EA to write a game on blu-ray,hd-dvd, and dvd. But to be honest look at how many movie companys are behind hd-dvd because they don't have to upgraded equipment. They have to spend millions to change to blu-ray

P.s instead of fighting over nextgen dvd's they need to hind a way to prevent straches on the disc

It will be interesting to see how the PS3 is going to deal with reading both DVDs and Blu-Ray. Will they use 2 lasers, a blue and a red or will they have a SUPER laser ;) lol.

Or will that be the next thing to be removed to help with the budget crisis.

You read it here first, folks.

I think Sony is seriously considering a "slash and burn" approach to compete with M$ next Spring. The unaudited cost of a PS3 is still very high; to sell it under $500 they need to either cut some functions out, or just take it in the rear for nearly the entire life of the console.

Meanwhile, I am still holding the faith that the Xbox 360 will be upgraded to Hd-Dvd (how does that make you feel, knowing that the Xbox still has potential for upgrades, whereas the PS3 is facing down-grades... hmm.).

This could really shake things up...for good or bad. What do you think?

Considering that such a decision would postpone the launching date, Microsoft will equip the initial models with classic DVD drives, and only after the new HD-DVD are ready, the Xbox will incorporate them.

How will they incorporate them later?
