Has any one out there tries using a external usb hard drive with the xbox 360 as i was wondering if it could be done

no it doesnt work the same way as the xbox 360 HD. The usb HD you can only store pics and music. You need the 360's HD for backwards compatability and saving games.

yea and it was in OXM they tried it 2. doesnt work.
