"Speaking in the September issue of US magazine Game Informer, Allard said that the company isn't yet ready to announce details of possible multiple models of the Xbox 360, with the presence of a hard drive being touted as one potential difference between models.

Allard's comment may also refer to the possibility that Microsoft will begin shipping Xbox 360 consoles with HD-DVD drives at some point down the line, replacing the DVD drive which will be present in the original model of the system.

'We've said [to developers], 'Hey look, don't bank on the hard drive always being there,'" he revealed. "'There may be a scenario in the future where we don't want to have a hard drive, and in that case, we have to make sure that the games that you've created are accessible to the broadest possible audience.'"

The rest here. (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=10777)

So we still don't know...

TBH I'm not too bothered about the hard-drive anymore. If one does come with the 360 then it'll be a plus, but it doesn't have to be as big as the one on the current Xbox. I don't think anyone's filled their Xbox hard-drives at all.

this is confusing.

the title reads: allard confirms: maybe no harddrive

how can there be confirmation of a variable answer?

maybe can swing either way.

anyways the 360 will come with a harddrive, one kit and maybe a new one somewhere down the road, but not now. simple as that.

too much pr probs if they make 2.

the 360 with no harddrive, no downloadable content storage space for us, high priced memory cards to use with 360 sounds like they're trying to imitate sony. Remove the hard drive and you remove one of the best features of the console. Maybe some developers will say ok then, you add your hd-dvd drive, but were not gonna support you in the future if you remove the harddrive, we may look else where to make games for one of your competitors or even the pc as the hardrive is intergral to one or more of our games. I know the 360 hard drive is removable but still, it will be a big mistake if they remove it and just add a HD-DVD player in the 360. This could do some damage to sales of the 360 in the future as people might say whats the point in having no storage device as standard like the old xbox. Sounds like Microsoft are cutting off their own nose.

I dont see how they will be able to offer free download content on XBLM and not give u a hard drive. I mean how many different memory card will u have by the end of the consoles life? I think this is a bad move if indead they do remove the drive. IMO it was a good selling point and something the xbox had over it competitors.

Anywayz i guess its just more reason to wait for the official announcement.

I just hope they go with the hard drive.

well, basically you will be subject to useing the memory bandwidth of the server...which could really suck because everytime you get on you would have to reload any new maps or levels...everytime. on the current xbox those things are stored on the HD and load times aren't even an issue, plus you can utilize those same levels and maps offline in splitscreen or system link...can't be done without a hard drive...well maybe with onboard system cache but that's beyond me. Also, consider the fact that you can hook up to your PC and use it's HD, but really I can't see any casual gamers going through that hastle. What disturbes me the most about no HD is that now developers have just been given the green light to develop to the lowest common donominator..which means they probably won't utilize it other than for saves so essentially your HD would just be a glorified memory card. I wonder how many people who were planning on buying Betheseda's Oblivion just realized that it can't be played unless you buy the 399 premium xbox360! unless they release a dummied down version for the "core" owners. Actually you could just use the memory cards..you would have to buy a 40$ memory card to play it probably.
