No need to convince you. Put in the game once, and you'll get hooked :top:.

Convince me to get Oblivion.
I'm not going to convince you of anything. Make up your own mind.
I heard it was good, it's just I wanted your opinion.
Now an opinion I will give.
Have you played KOTOR 1 or 2? If you have and really liked those games you'll like this.
The thing with Oblivion is you don't have to follow a formula. In most games you have a set goal. You must go through this level and that level to get this. I have 25 hours into this game and I have not started the game really. The main thing is to close the gates of Oblivion, that's it. I haven't done that yet. I guess if we wanted to be simple, I'm still on level 1.
This is what I like about this though. You get to do WHATEVER and I mean WHATEVER you want to do. The map is 16X16 square miles. You don't have to unlock anything and it's all open for you to explore. Some examples of the freedom are...
There is an Arena in the Imperial City. You go there and begin to fight people all the way up to grand champion.
There are guilds (they're like clubs) for different people. There is the Dark Brotherhood (you are a paid assassin), Theives Guild (you steal things and get money), Mages Guild (learn magic and fight things), Fighters Guild (you become hired muscle), and a couple of more. Each guild has it own little story line and missions. They also have their own hiding spots and safe houses.
There are over 200 caves, sewers, forts, ruins, dungeons, and mines all over the place. You can go into one, fight whatever is in there, take whatever you find or want and then turn around and sell it. You can also keep it too because I've found some very nice weapons and armor in those places.
There are 8 towns I believe not counting the Imperial City. Each town has people and several of them have problems. In one a gang of women are seducing men back to a hotel and killing them for their gold. In another city a man's sons are off at their house fighting a gang of trolls and he wants you to help them. You can choose to do these quest or not it's up to you.
Overall I think this is a great game and I like it because of what I just mentioned, the freedom.

I agree with Jackal. This is a great game with the freedom to do anything you want. Maybe it doesn't have enough action to keep the GTA fan enthralled, but it has so much to do, the same freedom is there.
Mix plants and make your own potions, help the poor, kill the poor, steal, protect, a mixture of anything. It is all up to you.
I haven't really gone far on the main quest either...

Well "thisguy211", you'll only convince yourself on whether you should buy it, but in the meantime, I'll proffer some opinion on the matter.
I would like to sleep more in real life, but haven't been able to do such since I bought this game. I've started it 3 times, each time getting my RPG skills a little better adjusted (it's been 15 years since my last RPG, FF1). But, it becomes easy to master the learning curve and eventually everything becomes almost 'intuitive'. My reasons for starting over had to do more with making the perfect profile rather than mastering controls.
Now I'm not saying the game is perfect; I think the horseback riding is lacking, and the inability to attack from a horse a joke. The games suffers from load times and the NPCs can be dumb, but these flaws seem very minor when you actually play the game. The level detail is superb and all the mini-stories outisde of the main story are captivating to the point they could be their own game [see: Hackdirt village storyline]. The freedom included is the best you will encounter thus far on a RPG console game.
Here is the point: you will exceed your money's worth if you purchase this game. Now, if by chance you are not an RPG guy, this may not appeal to you. But this game can be played like a FPS if you so choose. Typically, I played 3rd person view while wondering around, 1st person when in battle. These you can change with the click of a toggle stick.
I mentioned that I had started the game over 3 times. Well here's a kicker; the game changes. What you expect to find in a chest (etc.), holds something entirely different the next time I started. This is a nice surprise, but kinda disturbing since I was looking for a specific weapon that wasn't there.
Better yet: rent it. If you don't like it, you're only out a few bucks.
