How do you controll dvds using the regular controller?

push any button and the play, stop, FF, RW icons should come up. just use the D-pad to highlight what you want to do and push A to select it. after that push B and the icon menu thing should dissapear. in the DVD menus just use the D-pad and the A button.

I personally don't use my 360 to watch movies. I use my progressive scan DVD player instead.

yea, back works to get rid of it, and the left thumbstick also works to navigate your options. if you're having issues with this it may be a broken controller or maybe a faulty DVD or 360
