Just buy an HD DVD player.

HD-DVD player runs about $500. I don't think I'll be paying that much... I'll pick up one of these for the 360 for about $100.

Isnt it more then that right now. I thought the only stand alone HD DVD player right now is about $1000. Never the less i am still getting this for my 360 as well.

You're thinking of a Blu-Ray player. RCA's HD-DVD player is $498.

Thats what you use to plug the HD DVD player into the xbox 360 itself

Is it really going to be $100. It that official? I expected much more, closer to $200 or $250.

Its not $100. They didn't announce a price yet but $100 seems way to low for something like an HD-DVD player. A 20Gb Harddrive for the xbox 360 cost $100 and the HD-DVD has so much extra stuff on it like a fancy case and extra usb ports. I'm guessing it will be a little cheaper than a PC HD-DVD drive because MS will absorb some of the cost. $200 seems fair for this drive don't you think but $150 should be a target for Microsoft and at $100 say bye bye to whatever chance blu-ray had. Free, well that will never happen but I wouldn't put it past Microsoft if they totally want to bang Sony. If they bundled it with a live service like lets say you sign up for 3 years of a top level xbox live service you get the HD-DVD drive or a Harddrive for free. Maybe work with the internet providers too. Here in Canada Microsoft is working with Telus on a Xbox live promotion. If you have a Telus phone then you can sign up for 1 year of xbox live and get a free xbox 360 game. Too bad I already have live. If your interested goto telus.ca and find the promotion.

I still dont understand why people still say they are saving money with the xbox.

Premium Package: $399
Wireless Adapter: $100
HD DVD Player: $100 (at the LOWEST)
-------
$599 with only 20 gig HD and no controller recharge

Sony 60 gig will be $599 with all of that PLUS 3 times the HD space, free online play, recharge kit for the controllers, Media card reader, and HDMI support.

Now i know im going to have both systems eventually and im not a fan boy to either side, just get the facts straight before you start mocking a system.. dont you think? :hmmmm2:

The point is you have a choice with HD-DVD. Second you have an choice with Wi-Fi, even though I have a wireless router I still won't use Wi-Fi for gaming because my router has a habit of disconnecting once in a while. Second the premium also comes with goodies like the headset. Second do you honestly think the premium is going to cost $399 near ps3 launch. I'm pretty sure in Canada there is going to be a $50 price drop since our dollar is way higher now. With the current exchange rate our console should be less than 449 canadian instead of 499 canadian (1 canadian dollar ~= $0.90 USD). Also with the memory card reader you have a choice if you want it you can buy one for less than $10 and connect it to the usb port of you xbox 360 and it will also support other formats such as xD. If you want you can trick out your xbox 360 with all the lastest accesories and it will cost you about the ps3 range but the whole thing is about choice and the xbox 360 is the only system that delivers on that. Which is why I am proud to say I AM CANADIAN and own an XBOX 360. (everyone stands up and cheers and rob schneider gets up and yells out "You can do it, go kick Ken in the woo hoo") Peace now to get back to the marketplace and try to get all those trailers before the evening

well i agree to the fact that if you want bottom of the end systems then M$ has that option for you. I myself like all the goddies so for people like that it seems that the PS3 might just give you more bang for your buck.

The HD-DVD drive for the 360 is "rumored" to be approximately $100. M$ will obviously be taking a loss on them at that price.

Microsoft also announced that they are going to bundle some type of universal xbox 360 remote with the HD-DVD so ya don't worry if you got a xbox 360 bundle with no media remote because MS has got you covered.

Is that a Fire-Wire "AKA" IEEE-1394 output next to the USB ports?

no its the mini USB port that will plug into the system itself.

Are you sure the mini-usb is used to plug the actual system into the xbox 360. It seems strange that they would do that. What I think it will be used for is the rumored HDMI cable. MS said it will be released when the time is ready and I feel HD-DVD is pretty ready enough. Like a mini-usb to HDMI/DVI adaptor.

That is impossible. The drive HAS to plug into the system for decoding and output, and they already said at E3 that it will plug in though USB. That is why there is a space on the back of the HD DVD drive for your Wireless adapter to snap in and 2 USB ports because the HD DVD drive will occupy the only USB port on the back of your 360. This drive is not a stand alone system you can plug right into the TV, if you could do that you wouldnt need the 360.

For the system to have an HDMI/DVI interface it will have to come out of the xbox itself where the HD cables plug in now. M$ still has no plans on having an HDMI interface but they can if they want to, i hope.

I think it is strange that they would use a mini usb port i thought they might use a normal usb port but i guess their is not much of a diference between the two. I wonder if they will ever use this for videogames.

i assume they do it so they can try to sell their own cable and say its for the HD DVD drive like the sony psp does. They dont want you taking your cable from your printer and using it on the 360. B -> A usb cables are not as common, mostly used for smaller devices like cameras.

But a signal can be relayed to the HD-DVD drive to the xbox 360 to be decoded and then sent back to the HD-DVD drive and sent to our TV's via HDMI/DVI. Or how about a new video cable that has HDMI/DVI.

No it cant:banghead: , that would mean that the HD DVD drive would have to have a GPU on it for video output. There would be no logical reason to do that. M$ has already expressed their feelings on HDMI/DVI and have already said many times they are not going to have it in the near future.

This was a big problem since HD DVDs are not supposed to output to full resolution on component video for DRM purposes, only regular DVD resolution. DRM can only be implimented with a digital signal, not analog. But it looks like M$ said that the DRM will be decoded in their own software allowing analog HD viewers to be able to get the same quality as HDMI.

The problem in M$'s eye is they want everyone who has a 360 to be able to get the HD DVD drive. And since most people dont have HDMI ( i think its like only 3-5%) that would kill their sales. You have to understand most people right now dont even have an HDTV let a lone HDMI ports. All in which will change in the future but as of right now, do not expect HDMI/DVI from the 360 for a LONG time. :bootyshak

I think the question is whether the HD-DVD drive will have a built in decoder. Performance would be greatly improved if it had one built in. However, if it didn't, one would think you would have to have a premium system with the hard drive for decoding to watch HD-DVD movies. The 360 has enough ram to play normal DVD's without a hard drive, but who knows about HD-DVD's. Just a thought...

looks like he knows it has to be decoded on the 360, he is talking about having a cable come out of the HD DVD drive and to the TV via HDMI/DVI. I was just explaining how the video output has to come out of the 360 itself.

I do agree that you are going to have to have an HDD for playback. We all know M$ said they would never require the HDD but final fantasy already killed that idea. So if thats not true maybe them not putting games in HD DVD format is a lie too! I hope so!:dancing2:
