Do you need the 20 gb hard drive to play xbox live or can u just use the memory card to save stuff such as roster updates

Im guessing that you need the hard drive but I really don't know. Im assuming you do because sometimes games get updates that I assume get saved to the hard drive. So Im gonna say yes but I've never tried it or anything.
You don't need the HD to play on Xbox live, just the memory card. I say this from experiance. Your live account just gets saved onto the memory card rather than the HD, doesn't take up much room either.
You will need a HD if you want to download any demos and other stuff from the marketplace.

If you just want XBL, than yes, all you need is the mem. unit. If you want to download content, well, you need the Hard drive.

Its worth it in the end to just have the HD even if you dont have a game because it will take a while for someone new to the 360 to test out all of the demos to decide which game to get anyhow. And its also so easy to rent them. In my opinion if you can get the HD just do it.

Definitely, what everyone else is saying...
you don't "need" the HDD, but it will make your experience a lot more enjoyable.
