View Full Version : Which resolution on CRT monitor?
Hi, I recently got my Xbox 360 and I'm wondering what resolution will look best on a CRT monitor? The highest supported resolution is 1360x768, so if this was a pc, of course I would choose that one. But then I've heard that the xbox actually only renders everything in 1280x720, so if I use a resolution higher than that won't it force the xbox to upscale the image, thereby perhaps creating some artefacts or degradation of quality?

Well, you would have to buy the VGA cable for it to work (Well, if not you should) and this lets you select 1360x768 as the output res for the 360. This means no scaling and uber HD awesomeness!
This solves your problem, as my HDTV has that native res and I use the VGA cable which is a massive improvement over component.

I got the VGA cable last week and love it. I have my 360 set to 1280x720. If you go higher than that the 360 goes down to 520 and does the old upscale trick to get 1080. Also you need to make sure your monitor can go to 1360x768 if thats what you want to set it to. Most standard monitors top out at around 1280x1024. Depends on your monitor and how high it will go. I've had mine at 1280x1024 and noticed a few things. First off I noticed lag in games not from the internet as these were done offline but from graphics and switching to 1280x720 I noticed no difference in graphics that I could see anyway.
I guess its up to you. Try all the settings and see which one you like the best. The VGA cable offers the following resolutions:
640x480
848x480
1024x768
1280x720
1280x768
1280x1024
and 1360x768
Edit: Forgot something. If get it all hooked up and think your graphics look some what fuzzy try unzooming your monitor by using the controls on the front or side of your monitor. I noticed that as well. The picture would zoom to full screen on the monitor after switching resolutions and zooming made the graphics look burry or fuzzy and that drove me nuts. I zoomed in until I was at 0 zoom and everything was clear and sharp like it should be. The viewable area after zooming in isn't bad either.
Thanks for the replies! Got a vga cable, and gonna try out both 1280x720 and 1360x768 for a while and see which one runs/looks best. For some reason 1280x1024 looks blurry on my screen.
