View Full Version : the diference between TOSHIBA disc drives, and HITACHI disc drives for 360s

Most of the 360s that overheat are the ones with the Hitachi drive. they are the older ones. people that have been through 3, or 4 360's probaly got another replacement hitachi one. the new toshiba ones run quieter, and overall they dont overheat. you can barely even hear there fan. the way to tell if your 360 has a HITACHI drive or a Toshiba drive is look on the top right part of the disc tray. if theres a hole, its hitachi, if theres no hole, its toshiba.
i just came back from my cousins house and he owns 2 premium 360s. he has one from launch (hitachi drive), and one thats like a week old (toshiba drive). in his basement (which is cold, and alot of ventilation for the 360s) we tested a game of PDZ. toshiba ran real quiet, while hitachi ran moderatly noisy. then upstairs where it was quiet a bit warmer, and no ventilation the Hitachi one ran really loud, while toshiba was just a little bit noiser. Toshiba 360 felt cooler compared to hitachi 360 after we played. but after playing pdz on both, the disc was hot. so for all you people that have gone through 2 or more 360s, check if there hitachi or toshiba.

interesting. I got mine about a month ago, and the manufacture date is March, 2006 so I'm not sure how true this theory is. You'd think my unit being manufactured in March 06 it'd have the toshiba drive.

I got a system at launch, not a single system problem. Sure, the drive it a little loud, but that seems to be the difference. My friend has a newer one and that's the only difference.

isnt that a good difference. especially playing during the night? i have a toshiba and its quiet but at night it gets to me unless my frends are talkin loud on the mic.

not for me, I can tune it out! I have an advantage with that, and my system is about 1-2 feet away from me! I would like the quieter drive, but I'm not going to go nuts. It works, and I am very happy with it. I have had to work with optical drives on PCs that are MUCH louder. One was as loud as an actual car engine!

I have the hitashi drive and it hasn't failed on me yet. (I got it in December). The drive might be noisey but it doesn't bother me since my DLP Tv as a pretty loud fan as well. The sound of the game coming through the speakers easily over shadow the drive. And when in the dashboard the drive doesn't spin so you can enjoy the silence.

Yeah, that's how I feel. If it works, who cares how loud it is.

ye it does matter. people that have gone through many 360's are always sent back hitachi drives. so thats why there ****ed up

Ive had 2 with the Hitachi drive and both have crashed on me. The first one I had since launch was decently quiet but over time it started to get louder. My second 360 with the Hitachi drive was pretty quiet and I didnt have any problems at all until one night then it crashed. Ive always kept them well ventilated and treated them like a baby. both of my brothers have a core with the Hitachi drive and they have worked great for them. I guess I just had some bad luck. I just recently got a new 360 with the Toshiba drive and it has worked great, very quiet with no problems at all so far. Its hard to say that the drive is a major factor in some 360s crashing unless there is something directly wrong with the drive.

I have had a hitachi drive 360 since the launch and I have had zero problems (knock on wood) my 360 is quite loud but I do not have a toshiba drive to compare it to so I do not know how much louder it is. I don't really care how loud it is as long as it works

u cant even hear the toshiba one

The Samsung is considerably quieter but you can still hear it but just slightly. I have no complaints about the Hitachi drive because it never bothered me even though it was quite loud compared to the Samsung, just turn up the sound a little lol.
I wonder why MS is using two different manufacturers? Have they completely switched to just using the Samsung/Toshiba drives or are they still using Hitachis also? Maybe they knew the Hitachis were inferior hardware or is it to just speed up manufacturing?

Hitachi's were rushed

The Hitachi's were much more cost effective as well, but M$ is discovering what can happen when you take that route.

My Hitachi 57" projection seems to be a good tv but it sounds like the disk drives are not. I got my system at launch with the samsung drive and have had no problems or scratches.
I've got the Samsung drive and the only problems I have are disc reading errors from time to time. Even though it could have nothing to do with the type of drive, it's still annoying.
Kinda pisses me off, if it happens much more I might send it in.

ye disc problems are because of the drive. do you keep your console on carpet. that could cause alot of dust to get up into ur 360 lens.

Thanks for the post. I was just talking about the two different drives with a friend of mine, and we were wondering what the differences were. This was quite informative and the pics where a nice touch.

Just a FYI on this topic, seems there is a 3rd DVD Drive for the 360, a Phillips drive.
