What are clans?

Hey, im new to the whole online gaming thing on live with my 360 ive had for a week or two, and its awesome. I was wondering what are clans, are they just a bunch of guys that play team elimination together alot or is it something more/else? Im at a level 3 so far after about a week of play, im not sure if that is decent or not, but ive just started. Anyway i wanted to know more about them, and maybe join one!
