View Full Version : HD 720p vs 1080i

I own an HDTV that for whatever reason only supports HD in 1080i (720p is not supported). What are the odds that the XBox 360 will allow me to upscale its 720p content to 1080i? I would hate to think that I can only play HD 720p games in SD. Are there any hardware solutions (short of purchasing a new reciever) that might upscale the signal for me, outside of the 360?

I'm not sure but maybe games that are 720p will still look really good even if your TV doesn't support it. And maybe most games will be in 1080i anyway so you won't have to worry about it.

No, all Xbox 360 games are going to be 720p standard, and I know the 360 can do 1080i, but the only way its going to be that hi of resolution is if the developers choose to do it, but that means more system power is going to be sucked up on the HD

Can't the TV up-scale the resolution?

If you fully read any of the info you would know that all games support 720p and 1080i and if I'm not mistaken 720p looks better than 1081i, seeing that 1080i is 1,081 lines of resolution(interlaced) and 720p is 720 lines(progressively scanned). My tv supports every available resolution(even 1080p) and was under $400

No, all games support 720p. 1080i is optional for the developer. While there are more lines of vertical resolution in 720p (per frame, at least), 1080i contains more data in the horizontal resolution...it's not just a matter of diving 1080 by 2. So 720p can often look better for high speed motion, while 1080i looks better for slower images. And my TV has no problem with 1080i/p either, it simply does not support 720p because of the standards it is based upon. Since I'm not going to blow a few hundred bucks buying a new TV just to make a few games look better, I'd like to know what my options are.

Prima Technologies 27 in. HDTV Monitor ($399.99), 480i/480p/720p/1080i/1080p HD compatibility. I got it at Sears(on sale for $379.99), it is their cheapest HDTV, if you want widescreen they have a 30in model; Prima Technologies 30 in. HDTV Monitor for $629.99. I searched every where online (for months) and this was the best deal I found by far!

I'm positive that on xbox.com you will find it in writting that all games support 720p and 1080i, it would be completely idiodic for some games to only support 720p, due to my reseach for tv's I found that only about 10 to 20% of HDTV's support 720p

Here is the proof, copied and pasted from xbox.com Games: Xbox 360 redefines what games look like, sound like, feel like, and play like to engage you like never before. With Xbox 360, epic worlds are alive with detail, from thunderous skies rumbling over a mountain range to tiny blades of grass rustling together in the breeze. Vibrant characters display depth of emotion to evoke more dramatic responses, immersing you in the experience like never before. You’ll see all Xbox 360 titles at 720p and 1080i resolution in 16:9 widescreen, with anti-aliasing for smooth, movie-like graphics and multi-channel surround sound.

Stormchaserkck thanks for clearing that up, I can't believe I just didn't check the source. I hope 1080i looks good in motion though as my older Sony downconverts 720p to 480p. I dunno maybe the 480p will be super smooth and kick much better than the 1080i, I doubt it though. I think I'll make due with the less smooth 1080i. I mean heck probably more than half the first people to get the 360 won't be able to get that. I shouldn't complain.

HDMI is too new. Probably would have been nice though.
Read this Post (http://forums.planetxbox360.com/16965-post11.html) You will be okay with 1080i.

All the games will support 720, they will also all support 480i in case you don't have an HDTV of course.
Regular TVs can't scale down the resolution, so you can't run 720p on a 480i set. Games running on regular TVs will actually render at 480. You would also need the HD connectors, regular TVs won't use these.
1080i is cool but won't be in all games, but 720p still looks hot.

The 360 will be able to "upscale" 720p games to 1080i if you choose.

Correct, 720 games can be scaled up to 1080 by the HDTV, but some aliasing will be incurred because a 720 frame is being stretched over a 1080 display. I have a 1080 TV and 720 images still look pretty good on it.
For a game to actually render in 1080 it needs to be coded that way, just like in a PC game when you change the resolution.

As #19 said. The 360 will perform scaling from 720p to 1080i if you select this option. This will allow your monitor to display in its native resolution.

The picture is very good. You might want to buy the 30in widescreen version. My 27in 4:3 has a button you can push that puts it in widescreen but, you end up with black bars on the top and bottom. I did the math and what you end up with is a 24in widescreen HDTV, the plus is, you get a 27in 4:3 standard def as well. If you can sit closer than 10 or so feet from your TV it really is quite a steal. Halo 2 in 480p looks sweet even when I pull out my computer chair up to the set at 5 or so feet. It feels just like I'm playing on my CPU minus the keybord and mouse. But if money is an issue the $230 might not be worth the extra 6in. Sorry about my other posts months back, I noticed that I kept on typing 1081i instead of 1080i.
