View Full Version : T.V's
Hey guys I'm buying a 360 some time next week, and I currently own a 32 inch flat screen basic t.v.
I plan on getting an HD-tv when I get the money, but my friend told me to play my 360 on s-video what is that and is it any good.
Sorry for sounding like such a noob but I really don't know anything about T.V.'s

Well, since you have an standard definition TV set, your friend suggested that you use a specific cable that gives you a better display (image quality) on screen. The s-video is a special cable (looks kinda like a keyboard PS2 cable on the end) that allows a better image quality. You have to be sure your TV accepts that type of cable though...
The best solution is to use a RGB cable ... I don't know if you're from Europe, but if you are ,you can find some RGB cables for your 360 (just go to your local store) that are exactly like a classic SCART cable. With that type of cable, you have the best possible image quality you can get on a standard def TV...
Oh, and by the way, when I mean "better image quality", I mean that colours appear clearer, and don't smudge around the edges...The end result is a sharper image... One good example on which you can see the difference is on on-screen text. Have you ever had trouble reading small on-screen text??? Well that's because the colours smudge around the edges defined by each caracter. Use an s-video or rgb cable and you'll be able to read much better...

I would recommend RGB over S-video as S-video has varying results ranging from a large improvement to basically un-noticeable colour richness.

I'm not European (RGB=?) but HDTV is best for the 360. In my opinion I wouldn't spend $400 on next gen technology and use standard definition, that's like buting a Ferrari and driving it at school zones. You should definetly get an HDTV they're getting pretty cheap. I'd recommend an LCD TV. Samsung makes the best LCDs in my opinion. Try websites like: Newegg.com - Buy Computer Parts, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras, and Electronics (http://www.newegg.com)
OneCall.com - HDTV, Home Theater, Camera (http://www.butterflyphoto.com)
for really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, cheap televisions.
I mean tv's that are $1400 at Bestbuy and $900 at one of these sites.

S-video is not worth it over standard cables. Its not worth the extra cost buying seperate cables for your xbox 360 for the slight improvement S-video gives you. Going to component cables are great since it allows for an increase in resolution, same as VGA cables. Since you already are planning on buying an HDTV in the future stick with the cables that come with the xbox 360 premium since the cable has 2 parts (Standard and Component) so for your standard Tv you can use the standard cables and then switch over to component once you get an HDTV. You never know your tv might already have component inputs for 480p.
Man that would be the best case scenario if my t.v could do 480p.
Here is some info about my t.v
It is an Apex DVD/T.V combination flat screen 27 inch. And that is all I know about.

Is this your Tv?
Apex Digital Inc (http://www.apexdigitalinc.com/proddetail.asp?category=Televisions&subcat=&linenumber=35)
It may be able to do 480p since it has an S-Video cable. maybe you can select that resolution through the DVD. But I would still recommend upgrading to a LCD TV. Check out this 26inch HDTV: Samsung LNS2651D 26" LCD TV Wide HDTV with Integrated ATSC Tuner (http://www.butterflyphoto.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=LNS2651D)
It has component video support for up to 1080i but I'd recommend 720p I don't consider interlaced to be true High Definition. And it's only $964.00!
Look at how much it is at Bestbuy: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7677926&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat95100050021&id=1134702961701
That's a $360 difference! No pun intended.
Ya that's my t.v. What did you mean when you said I maybe can select 480p through the DVD. How does that work?
Ya that LCD looks sweet, but sadly I still can't afford one for awhile. That's why I hope my t.v now is good enough to play the 360 until I can upgrade to an LCD.

I don't think 480p can go through S-video, you have to use component to get 480p.
so i just plug those cables into the t.v then go into the 360 interface and set it to 480p
