Speaking at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Bernd Diemer, senior game designer of Crytek, explained that next-generation consoles don’t offer enough computational power to run Crysis, German publication Heise reported.

Although Crysis will support both current and the next version of DirectX, Crytek claims that only DirectX 10 allows the game to run as it was intended by the developers because the next-generation DirectX API, which will ship along with Windows Vista, allows more effects and more objects to be drawn on the screen with a smaller computational cost for the hardware.

Diemer explained that “next generation consoles like the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 do not offer the sufficient power” to assure the quality of gameplay Crytek demand for Crysis.

Crytek reiterated at GC 06 that currently, Crysis in only in development for Windows. We haven’t lost hope that we’ll eventually see an Xbox 360 version of this first-person shooter.

what im hearing here is that the next gen. consoles are just using the older directX . i really don’t believe that the PS3 and te 360 don’t have the raw computing power necessary for Crysis when the PS3 has its 7 SPE running in with its single 3.2GHz CPU its CELL CPU. and when the 360 has 3 identical duel threaded 3.2GHz CPUs which in theory could run as 6 CPUs when fully using the duel threaded technology once the developers finally reach that level of hardware familiarity.. I don’t see the developers using PCs with three CPUs to run the game. In the end in my opinion its all coming down to the directX and not the hardware its self

I hear that the 360 has a special version of DirectX9, something like a DirectX 9.5 model. Some of the upgrades for DirectX10 where implemented into the 360, but not the full meal deal.

Still, the 360 could run Crysis just as the Xbox could run a downgraded HL 2 or Far Cry. Sure, not as pretty, but the ability is there. Personally, I think they should port it, as the minute Crysis is up and running, out comes the pirates -- yarr matey, I be copyin' this lil' gem in no time! Yarr!

Can you fix the link? I'm curious to see where this article is from.

Too weak? Nah... they just doesnt want to go through the trouble of making it work on consoles. Lazy

BTW I'm with ya Grindstone on the piracy thing! yarrr!!

Yarr!!!....erm, I, uhm mean that IF Crytek spent enough time, rather than just simply porting it over, both the PS3 and the 360 could (in theory) run it. Maybe in later years we may see a game that is comparable to Crysis, ah....what a sight it be, matey! DAMMIT GRIND, YOU GOT IT IN MY HEAD.

The DirectX 10 claim is false. It's a set of API that video card vendors follow so that games can run on their cards. When developers make PC games they have various configurations that the PC owner might have (ATI/Nvidia card) so by having a standard the developers can code for the standard and that way they know that video cards that support that standard will play the game and it's features (HDR, shader model 3, etc).

Half of directX10 features are useless to the xbox 360 since it has 1 gpu so no general coding is needed. None the less microsoft made the xbox 360 atleast direct X 9 compatible and sony has made the ps3 openGL compatible.

All Crytek has to do is create their own engine that is optimized for the xbox 360 or ps3 and they can get the game to run. The main obstacle is the ram since high end PCs have alot of them.

If EA does buy Crytek then expect the game on every possible system, I wouldn't put it past them to have a psp version even.

512Mb might not seem much, but it is probably comparable to almost 2Gb of RAM on a PC, as it is on-board. Also, it is much better RAM than that of mots PC's so I think that isn't the issue, and to be honest I can't see what areas specifically on the 360/PS3 wouldn't allow it to run it

They've had the game running on a Nvidia 7900 before right? That GPU is about on par with the 360's so it shold be possible...

yeah i like how this thread is going.. yeah sorry about the link i already fix it for u guys.

i honestly just think he's kind of talking out of his ass. if they really really wanted to they could do it. no matter how hard (they say) it would be. we think games look good now like Mass effect and GEARS of WAR. But there nothing compared to the games coming out in two to three years. And we all know this, its how the game industry grows and thrives.

The Xenos in the 360 is more capable that a 7900...by some margin, but I heard that when they were demo'ing it at E3, they were using dual 7900's!

The way I understood it is the 360 is currently running DX9, but with a few switches flipped in a software update, it can be running DX10.... Is that the case?
