The Inquirer is never a trusted source, but Sony are having problems with the RSX (namely heat and chip yield), so this could be to solve any overheating problems. The only thing I can think of to go agaisnt any reduction in performance is the fact that Final dev kits have been at the developers for quite a while now, and games are being produced to that spec, so a sudden drop isn't likely (although, who's to say the downgrade wasn't in the final dev kits....).

Yet I think that is the main problem (heat) for Sony, and the reason they haven't started production on the PS3. Here we are about 2 and a half months out from launch, and they still haven't started up the manufacturing lines. I think the combination of the Cell, RSX, Blu-Ray, PS2 BC parts, and internal power brick, they have massive heating issues. The Dev kits weigh in at 70 pounds, and I'm willing to bet the reason is to regulate heat dissipation.

I'm beginning to think that the PS3 still can't function properly with all those guts mashed in together. It causes too much heat, and the PS3 has a melt down. So maybe they are finalizing an external power brick, or down grading the RSX, or the Cell (there was a rumor that it would be down-scaled to 2.8Ghz).

I dunno. But if they haven't started production within the next couple of weeks, we can pretty much guarrantee that there will not be a US launch anytime this year.

When did M$ start the 360 manufacturing? Wasn't it like the 1st week of August? If that's the case, Sony maybe screwed for supply. We're going to see $4,000 PS3's on ebay.

I don't think they would do this. Only time well tell.
