Posts: 670 | A few thoughts about Dirt & Forza 2 This is a tough one for me. I love this game. It almost made me feel like Forza 2 let me down a little. Dirt doesnt have the best sim handleing but it does have sim driving in that the wheel effects are good and the incar view makes the game for me. Forza isnt a sim compared to Dirt and thats scary because Dirt isnt the most strict sim. Forza is hard to view as a sim when the only way I can drive is to fly in the air behind the car and kind of point it in the right direction. Or I can strap myself to the hood of it with no views of my mirrors or winshields or my hands. I want to actually drive the dang car and to do that I need to be in it. Of course Im a racing fan and I will love Forza to death for a long time but no incar is my dissapointment in it for me.
As far as dirt goes, I love the incar, but it is gonna kill me to watch that other car in the cross events and know it isnt another person I can talk to when I race them. And the dunebuggys are fun but only against the AI, hmm.... not nearly as cool. So long there is some communication in the lobby or whatever the hill climb will be cool. Two almost perfect games but both need just a little more to be really perfect. Either way my wheel is going to get worn out on both of these.
Now just bring on some NASCAR, Pro Race Driver and Somehow GTR & F1

Sorry to be harsh but DiRT is in no-way a simulation. It has about as much realism as PGR3. Yes, the car's straight line performance is fairly accurate, the cornering and braking is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off. As I've said on other forums, I am really really pissed off with DiRT. I was expecting at least Colin McRae 2005 realism. No. We got....this? As the only rally game on the system, I wanted. No...I NEEDED it to be realistic, and it failed - miserably.
Some major issues I found playing it:
-The torque of the cars isn't right, thus the gearing is way off.
-Inertia...or lack thereof.
-Braking feel: they brake like they are on a dry tarmac road, braking from 20mph
-Front-end grip is far too high, especially on gravel.
-Steering is too precise and there is very little weight in the cars
-Because of lack of inertia, correcting a normally impossible slide or late-brake is easy.
-Changing pitch mid-corner is too easy
-WHERE IS THE CO-DRIVER?!
-Traction is too high
Besides those issues, the crash physics are quite nice and the damage is realistic.
Once again we've been shown that just beause a game is pretty, doesn't make it a good game.
Oh and Codemasters, go play Richard Burns' Rally (On PC and Xbox) and come back and tell me your game is a simulation.
If anyone wants to know what a real rally game is, go pick up Richard Burns' rally for a few bucks as it is backwards compatible (or get it for PC).

Posts: 670 | I agree with you except that I do believe you will have a co-driver in some modes for whatever thats worth, not much really.
I told you in that other thread bofore this demo that it wasnt really a sim. And they really didnt market this hard as a sim that I noticed. On their forums I think it has been determined for a while its not much of a sim. But I have my incar and better wheel feedback so im gonna play it and try to have a smile on my face. What can I say, been wanting this and forza bad for a while. Why did they both let me down.
The wheel does make it arcade type fun though at least. I hope you are using the wheel btw, it really helps the game not feel dead. The wheel really pulls around and bounces and vibes alot. But of course you want a rally sim which this really isnt so even the wheel might not save it for you.
Maybe I should get Richard burns rally for the PC, does anyone know if that thing to make 360 controllers work on the pc out yet?

Posts: 3,233 | I warn anyone who thinks they'll be able to jump on Richard Burns' rally and even be competitive; they are in for a BIG surprise. I've still not figured it all out yet. Basically you are on full throttle for about 3% of the time, the rest of it you are either feathering it to change the pitch of the car or you are left-foot braking to get the back end to swing around. It's just insane - especially the Tarmac French rally O_o.
If you can go a stage without sticking it in the foliage 2 or 3 times, you're doing well
I love it, and have it on PC since the Xbox version doesn't have Force Feedback (like all Xbox games lacked) and since it's an oldish game, it is not demanding on your PC. It looks good enough for me and plays really, really well.
And as Karma said, you can get the Wireless Dongle thingy that lets you use Wireless controllers on your PC (i.e. the wheel)...I have no idea how much it is in the US but it's not much.
Oh and I must ask Hippy: why are you disappointed in Forza 2? I'm not getting it, but that's not because it's a disappointing game, it's just that I already have games similar too it on PC...which have unlimited (almost) amount of mods. Quote: |

I hate this industry!

Oh Scotracer, say it isn't so! First you sell MotoGP 06 and now this.
Come on, it'll be fun, you'd get to spank all us wannabe race heads.
I know you love your GTR, but why not one more great racer?
I'm stunned. Please tell me you'll pick up MotoGP 07...
Oh, and I liked DiRT, for what it is. Yeah, could be a lot more sim, but it looks fantastic, and I think it's a ****load of fun. Full game might have some more options to help the handling. I know they have a bunch a wheel settings, even for the demo. Folks on the Forza board are posting what they are using to get more FFB.
I love racing games, all kinds. Right now, hooked on Test Drive, before the Forza storm so to speak. So I'll pick up Dirt right away too.
Not the first time I've been recommended to go get RB Rally. Not easy to find here in the states. |

I hate this industry! | My disapointment is in the fact that the game is nearly perfect. All they needed was incar view and I would call it my favorite game on the 360 ever. If you are going to make a "SIM" you cant tell me that Im gonna "Simulate" driving by flying in the air behind the car and basically point it in the right direction. You also cant tell me I have to sit on the hood either (although its a step better then flying in mid air). For me to feel like Im simulating driving I need to be in the dang car. I can survive this though, so you see the disapointment is actually in how good the game is, if only it had incar it would be nearly perfect.

I prefer the incar too, but the bumper cam is just as good, without having to deal with a partially obstructed view. It gives you the same sensation as sitting in the car.

Posts: 182 | Depends on the car and my mood, but I find myself racing in the bumper cam instead of in car as well. The one right outside the window, not down low in PGR.
But I love the helmet cam in DiRT.
TDU and PGR both have some great in car views. |
