A problem with signing up to xbox live

I've recently sorted out a router so i can play online with my ps3 so i thought i'd set up a live account for the 360 however when it asks if i have a msn hotmail account i always select yes but it won't proceed because it says my e-mail address for hotmail is in use by someone else. First of all how??? and why do i need to have an msn account so i set up xbox live anyway?

that is only for instant messenger.
they just ask for it so you can use the 360 instead of a computer(i think is dumb).

You could just create a new hotmail account and use that instead axeman.
