Posts: 843 | Quake 4 Multiplayer Preview This game seems to be coming together, and with good multiplayer gameplay it could be one of the games that slips under the radar! Quote:
The multiplayer legend comes to Xbox 360, brimming with online modes and gore galore!
Halo? Halo who? Quake used to be the daddy before Master Chief came along. Quake 4 picks up where the second game left off (the third game in the series didn’t include a campaign mode). Humankind is still engaged in a relentless battle with the Strogg, an alien race that transforms torn-off limbs into super-soldiers.
Despite their reputation for forced organ donations, the Strogg don’t scare top hero soldier Matthew Kane. You’re fearlessly taking the fight directly to their home planet. Unfortunately, the ship you’re on is struck by a missile and crashes way behind enemy lines.
At this point, you hook up with two AI-controlled survivors, Anderson and Webb. They’ll stick with you as long as they still have legs to stand on, providing fire support and healing you when necessary.
Tactical transfers
Having AI-controlled buddies is a first for the series, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be having an easier ride from now on. Keeping up with the pace, the Stroggs introduce their ‘tactical transfers’, a biomechanical mutation of the human soldiers. These guys move, take cover and work as a team just like your marine allies do. Unfortunately, because they’re on home turf, they also know their way around the nebulous facilities a lot better than you do.
Perhaps the biggest evolution to date is the introduction of controllable vehicles in Campaign mode. They look like a fearsome prospect, whether they’re under your control or the enemy’s. On one of the large open battlefields, you can command a marine hover tank (imagine a floating version of Halo 2’s Scorpion tank, complete with heavy turret and machine-gun).
Even more impressive, the marine walker is halfway between a suit of armour and a full-blown mech. Inside the walker, you’ll see a display terminal with switches and system commands. It’s a bit slower than the tank, but carries a similar arsenal with a shoulder-mounted rocket launcher and machine-gun. unfortunately the Strogg also have walkers. These look like hideous bio-mechanical four-legged spiders; frightening enough when you’re in a vehicle, but even worse when you’re alone and on foot.
Reaction time
But onto the mode that made the series famous: Deathmatch. The game’s multiplayer is very similar to Quake III Arena’s; more focused on reaction time and targeting skill than tactics or team play. A CTF mode is included, but Quake’s still predominantly a celebration of individual skill.
Each of the nine weapons reflects that. The two defaults in your multiplayer arsenal are the gauntlet and machine-gun. The gauntlet is a huge metal glove with a spinning buzzsaw blade attached to it. As a melee weapon it’s useless unless your opponent is standing right next to you, but it can be surprisingly lethal after you’ve collected a quad-damage power-up.
The machine-gun is a pretty useful weapon, not least because it comes with infinite ammo and a handy scope for those distant headshots. Almost all of the remaining weapons are throwbacks to earlier Quake titles. There’s the rail gun, lightning gun, nail gun, hyper blaster, shotgun, rocket launcher and grenade launcher.
In terms of speed and control, nothing much has changed. It’s still the finely tuned fast and accurate gameplay, and the battle of wills we’ve come to love. And we cannot wait until it’s released!

But I may just pick that game up, it sounds awesome, especially on Live.

As for the makers, I picked up this quote from gamespot.com. 'The Quake games from id Software are made up of the most widely recognized and popular first-person-shooter series of all time. So some were surprised to hear that the next game, Quake 4, was going to be a departure from the "lone hero against an army" style of gameplay used in the previous games. People were probably even more surprised to hear that the game was being developed by longtime id collaborator Raven Software rather than at id's own studios in Dallas, Texas. But now that we've finally had a chance to see the game, it seems safe to say that Quake 4 will have plenty of exciting shooter action and even a few intriguing twists and turns.' |
