Posts: 109 | Marcus is actually in a drug-induced coma dreaming about this war. He had lost his family to a savage dalmation attack and fell into a deep depression. He secluded himself from society. He watched a lot of Future Weapons on the Military channel and shot up whatever drugs he could find. Out of some kind of sick, twisted drug haze he tried writing sci-fi stories but they never made it to paper because he didn't know how to write. So he took up odd jobs to buy a type-writer. One night, after what most would say was a disgusting, dangerous mix of drugs, candy and alcohol, and the movie Tremors, he came up with this story of creatures coming to the surface, because that scenario has never been played out before. But before he could stagger his way to his barely-used type-writer, he went into shock, but not before pushing his life-alert pendant. And so now he lies in a hospital bed, in a drug induced coma, haunted by this nightmare, because a Dalmation took his family.

Posts: 109 | The jail cell represents the hold his addiction has on him, and the trial represents his inability to save his family from the dog which slayed them and the judgement he placed on himself. He's guilty for not acting. Dom is actually his vision of his son as an adult. Baird is his wife and Cole Train is his disowned step-son from a previous failed marriage.

Posts: 808 | Marcus was in jail for disobeying a direct order and when the locust came, Marcus went back to try to save his dad. As a result, his dad was dead anyway and Marcus was tried for treason or something. Hence in Act 1, Marcus when walking through the courthouse says in response to another Gears comment about it being a beautiful place Marcus adds "yeah and allot of lies too". Dom said, I heard about your trial too, what a sham. Dom is best mates with Marcus and got you out of jail at the start as well.
Personally everyone didn't think the story was that great, but I actually found the theme of it all quite interesting. I mean, so many questions like what happened at emergence day, what about the war over emulsion that raged for years, what about where the locust came from or how their existance came about. Not to mention the whole story on the formation of the COG group. I want to know Cole trains story, as well as Doms and carmines. I think Epic has a chance to really build on this rather very sketchy and poor story line and make GOW2 a real success.
Dont you?

Posts: 5,352 | In my opinion, when creating Gears of War, Epic made a serious developer error. It seemed as though they developed a story arch relating to the game rather than creating a game that revolved around the story arc. There is a significant and distinguishable difference between these two methods. Games which have a solid plot base and arc which are then developed usually have the better story. Games which are developed and a plot or story arc are added later usually end up reading like a 7th grade maturation pamphlet. You always build around the story. (See FF, MGS, Halo, God of War, et cetera)
If you complete the Game, Eric Nylund is mentioned as a writer during the end credits. Now, being a fan of his previous work I must say it is in no way indicative of his true story telling abilities. I'm not sure what his entire role entailed but if I were to guess it would be as a consultant more than anything. If Nylund were given free reign I guarantee the story would have been more enthralling and immersive tale than what the end result provided (which was ****).
I agree, it can be fixed and if Epic decides to place a larger emphasis on the actual story than game play I am sure the next Gears installment will be great. However, Gears was a great game but if there is one flaw, one imperfection, one **** up, it is the story save the short campaign. It only demonstrates that yes, STORY does play a large role in video games but that's just my opinion, what do I know? |
