Default child discipline?

as im only 21 years old i dont feel the need to have kids yet, but as a person who was IMO brought up the right way i have to ask the rest of you, how, if at all, do you discipline your children?

when i was growing up my parents gave me a very simple method until i was about 10, and this was that bad = smack and good = treat.

if i was bad which i often was i got a smack, and didnt do it again (or i'd do it again and again and get harder smacks and then i definately wouldnt do it again lol)

if i was good i'd get a small treat such as an ice cream, or something else that i asked for, a video rental etc

but a lot of people don't seem to discipline their children at all, and their kids end up being brats.

i wasn't perfect, far from it in fact, taking hard drugs at 14, selling them in over 18 clubs at 15, yet since my "rebelious streak" seemed to end when i was about 17 or 18 i havn't touched drugs since, simply because i know right from wrong because of the way i was brought up.

i very much thank my parents for giving me the sense to be able to walk down the right path rather than the inevitable path that i was going down.

if i ever have kids i'm gonna discipline them in the same way, kids can't understand right from wrong and they definately can't negotiate like adults, they need simple answers such as good = treat, bad = pain (pain = smack...spank for you americans, i know you cant translate from the "american" laguage to english, burn...i'm just kidding lol), personally i think this is the best way to learn, but i'm looking forward to hearing how you guys discipline your kids or if u dont have kids i'm looking forward to hearing your opinion on my method/your opinion

i agree with the smacking policy, in Australia (and other places im sure)there ruling against it so basicly there telling people to raise there children the Governments way, think about it ask ur Grandparents and in some cases ur parents when they were at school they got the cane on the arse if they did something wrong and i bet u they never did it again and my parents always tell me when they were nasty to others or being little ****s they were givin a smack on the arse and my parents turned out perfectly, do nothing stupid, dont break the law there model citizens but u look at our generation kids are stealing cars at the age of 14, doing drugs, fighting in the streets, underage drinking that kind of stuff would of been unheard of back in the 60s, 70s, 80s. with all this with the timeout corner crap that to me angers the child to possibly hate there parents for just throwing them away when they do the wrong thing and sending children to there rooms where nowadays there are TV's toys galour they think to themselves well if i do something wrong i simply end up in my room with toys and to me its not the right way to be bringing children up.

When and if I get children, I'll raise 'em like they did in 'ol Sparta. For good measure I'll get two kids and later on in their lives let them fight to the death.

i have a child. shes only 8 months. so sometimes the only thing she responds to is a little pat on the hand when shes playing w/ something she shouldnt. I think she understands what "NO" means, but tries to ignore it because sometimes she stops, sometimes she doesnt (and just looks at me and smiles hoping to catch me off guard).
Using spanking sparingly I think is ok. I come from a very violent household and know well how it feels to be abused. My child/children will never know that feeling thankfully.

That being said...

TO THE DEATH!

Once my daughter is old enough to walk, let the beatings commence. No but she does the same thing to me Rick. I will tell her no then she will stare at me until I am no longer paying attention and without looking, her eyes dead on me, her hand slowly begins to move to whatever she was doing that got her in trouble. It's usually turning on my 360. She loves those green lights!

Many parents spoil their kids and let them do whatever they want mainly because they are afraid of their kids not liking them.

thats actually very true, bird i know had kids very young (17) and she has 2 girls now ones 5 and the other 3ish i think, and she spoils them rotten she wants them to think of her as a mate, and its only going end up bad once those kids hit the teens, we were actually talking about it other day funny enough.

Myself when i have kids which i plan on having when i am around 25/26 im going try have a nice balance, be sound when i need to be and still lay down the law when it needs be aswell. I think the main thing is just to be there for your kids, i dont know about being strict or easygoing but as long as your there at all the good and bad times i think things work out pretty well....

I was raised pretty well, was only me and my ma for a good few years so i did get away with alot tbh, but i moved out at 16 into community gaf with few mates and i kinda grew up pretty quickly that way, bills at 16 will do that to you ^_^, im pretty settled now and im a average joe u could say, think most of my bad behaviour is gone. I still have the maturity of a 12year old, but am grown up in the larger sense of things.
But i defo think just being there for your kids is the main thing.

I think thats the most honest and deep statement you have ever made about yourself!

I think the balance is in just being an aware parent. I love to have fun and play with my daughter, but there also comes times when I have to let her know right from wrong. Its not about being a friend, its not about being an authority figure. I think those things will just come and mesh together if you are just a dilligent parent.
