I saw this picture on a story about Oil executives defending their profits before congress and I could not resist.... | since they already flamed you for your lack of being able to spell, I'm just going to go ahead and flame you for your wording of "unfair profit". What profit is unfair? They provide a product which you buy. If you dont like it, than go buy an ethanol or electric car, and quit your bitching.
Besides, if you want to talk about "unfair profiting", you need to look at the source.. OPEC and the US government. OPEC sets the per barrel rate, not exxon. Exxon and other companies make a pretty much standard 8% on a gallon of gas. OPEC makes hundreds of % on it. The US government makes on average about 32 cents i beleive for every 8 cents the gas company does. Then you add on the state taxes. In a state like california, they equal to around $.90 cents per gallon tax. Who is really gouging you??
Go to a place like the brittish isles where they pay by the litre, and are taxed so heavily on it by the government you would have to be a billionaire to afford an SUV.
And within those "obscene" profits that the dems like to tout, the oil companies spend billions on new exploration, drilling, and research. The government does nothing but take the $$ |

Posts: 3,184 | In a democratic society (well, even though the USA isn't a democracy, it's a Republic) there's no such thing as an unfair profit.
Now, the majority of the prices for fuel are from taxes. For instance, 75% of the fuel price in the UK is tax...even though oil prices are the highest they've ever been ($120 a barrel, at least).
Blame the governments, not the oil companies. |

Supply and demand drive the future's markets and bid the price up. Growing economies in China and India have put a strain on the oil market which is why the US needs to drill for their own. The environmentalist hippies have other ideas. They are the only ones enjoying the high gas prices. Here's a breakdown of money distribution for a gallon of gas in California: Estimated Gasoline Price Breakdown & Margins Details
Out of the $4/gal we pay, the oil companies get a whopping 6 cents. I'm sick of this baseless argument that the oil companies are screwing everyone over when the government rakes in more in taxes on a gallon than the people producing it do.

Blame the governments, not the oil companies. | first, i'm getting tired of non-Americans trying to incorrectly define America. we're both a republic AND a democracy. i think we can best be described as a representative democracy.
i came across this interesting page on history of crude prices and where they come from. History and Analysis -Crude Oil Prices
also, the majority of gas prices doesn't come from tax, at least not in the U.S. i can't find the report i read on a breakdown of gallon costs in the U.S., but the majority is for "expenses" (exploration, drilling, refining, transportation, etc.) and what a lot of people overlook are ROYALTIES. i think Exxon paid out nearly $40 billion in royalties alone to the mid-east last year. i'll try to find the source for that. |
