Default Samsung to Develop Dual HD DVD, Blu-ray Player

Quote:
The Financial Times revealed today that Samsung plans to introduce a player that will play both next-generation DVD formats, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

Choi Gee-sung, Samsung's head of consumer electronics, told the Financial Times Deutschland: "We would welcome a unified standard but if this doesn't come, which looks likely, we'll bring a unified solution to market."

Although Samsung is a backer of Blu-ray, the company believes that by supporting both standards will help the consumer: "It won't be simple but you'll see our solution in the coming year. Consumers will be too confused otherwise."

The good news for Xbox 360 owners is that Samsung, in addition of the memory chips, is the provider of the 12X DVD drive used in the Xbox 360, which is developed by Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Corporation.

So, Samsung is going to make it. Well, that's good and all, but how much is this thing going to cost us?

Man, I could only think it would be about $500-600 at launch. Then again, the first DVD players were around there, if not more, also.

Isn't this old?

Or maybe I looked at it today and forgot...lol

This should be great, now the 350 can use whatever drive is the clear winner.

For the last time:

1) Microsoft have not said that they will definitely be swapping out the DVD drive on the XBox 360 for a next generation drive. They will montior the market.
2) Even if they did, the games will continue to ship on standard DVD.

So no, you don't HAVE to buy another XBox 360.

And the people that buy the 360 at launch (a lot!) will most likely buy a seperate dvd-player, that supports hd-dvd and blue-ray when it is released! As long as the drive does not affect the games there are no worries! So chill and buy the 360, it's gonna be a blast

From everything I have read, even if they do release an Xbox360 with a next generation drive it will only be to play HD-DVD movies. All the Xbox360 games will be on standard DVD drives.

Smart move for Samsung to cover their bases though and create a drive that will read both formats. I wonder which format will go the way of Beta-max

I would hope both formats go the route of Beta-max and that everything goes to HDD's within your TV. Maybe I'm just thinking too far into the future. But seriously, why not just build TV's with HDD that are connected to the internet and just download it all? Just eliminate DVD formats altogether.
