I have no trouble sharing music between my 360 and my PC (using wireless adapter), but I am having trouble getting the 360 to find movies/video. I have ensured that the file I am trying to find is .wmv and have even gone to the extent of putting a .wmv file onto a usb drive and then plugging it into the 360 (works fine), but it won't find the same file over the network.
I'm in the same boat man. I can't get anything from my PC but everything is in order as it should. I dinked around with it for a few hours and gave up.
What kind of router do you use? I had the same problem with 2 different routers and each one had a different solution so if you could please specify what kind of router you have that would be helpful.
Yes Wrutless is right, they have to be in the "My Videos" folder, if they aren't you have to go to the Windows Connect icon in Control Panel browse for the folder they are in and enable that folder for file sharing.
Okay, thanks first to those that replied. It was a big help.
I have fixed things to the point where I can now stream .wmv wirelessly from my PC to the 360, not to mention pause, fast forward, rewind etc on the fly. I am pretty stoked about this because up until now I have been using TVersity, which while it's a great program it can be frustrating for those of us with an older PC that struggles to transcode on the fly.
Here's what I have done for those who would like to know (apologies in advance for stating things which are blindingly obvious for some).
Step 1. Open WMP11, click Tools, Options, Library, then click on the Monitor Folders button. Once inside there, click Add and point it to the folder where your videos are stored, then click Ok, at which point it will search for relevant files. Once it has finished you can close media player. Once you start the 360, it should automatically find any files that are in the specified folder.
Step 2. Using TVersity, I doubleclicked on the file I wanted to transcode (I use TVersity because it is the simplest and best by far IMO) then let it run in the background. Time varies, but after checking back 20-30 minutes later in TVersity's cache folder you should find the transcoded file, at which point you drop the transcoded file into your target folder. You will also have to rename the transcoded file so it has a .wmv extension.
Step 3. Start the 360 and go to the Media tab, then videos, at which point it should do a quick search and find the files you are looking for.
Hopefully I have explained things correctly, but feel free to ask any questions for anything I may have skipped.
Once again, thanks to those who pointed me in the right direction.
No problem, but now I am having some issues with TVersity.
If I start TVersity and my 360, then start watching a video, it will play through fine (albeit the occasional pause due to older PC) and once completed I will find the complete transcoded file in the cache folder, at which point I can shift it out of there and into My Videos folder to stream without the need for TVersity/transcoding (thereby enabling me to fast forward etc).
I wanted to skip the first step of this and just start TVersity on my PC (with 360 turned off) doubleclick the file I want to transcode, then leave it until it had finished. Unfortunately, unless I am doing something wrong, the file doesn't fully transcode this way. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
I am not having any problems streaming using either TVersity or through a shared folder.
The problem I would like to solve is how do I use TVersity purely as a transcoder, with the end file being one I can stream through a shared folder and also one I can fast forward, rewind etc. I have done it before, but it was more a fluke than anything. I can easily get TVersity to transcode something, then shift it to 'My Videos', but the end result is a file I can only watch without the ability to fast forward etc.
I have been having this problem for a long time. It used to work great, but all of a sudden I started getting the "No Videos Found" message for all my video folders. I tried TVersity and, to be honest, was unimpressed. It didn't play all videos and often had issues synching the shared videos with newly populated videos in the folders it was supposed to be sharing. Plus I had to restart the TVersity Server quite often.
Luckily, I figured out a solution!
I changed all my Divx/Xvid file extensions from .avi to .mp4 That's it! Now all my video files show and work perfectly! Give it a try and hopefully you'll have the same luck as me.
