Posts: 843 | Microsoft is aiming at making the xbox360 unhackable! Quote:
Such actions are frowned upon by the hardware manufacturers. In July last year, Sony won a court case to ban the selling of mod chips for its PlayStation 2 in the UK.
In July of this year, a 22-year-old man became the first person in the UK to be convicted for modifying a video games console.
With the 360, Microsoft is aiming to make it as hard as possible to hack.
"We've taken security to the hardware level and built it in from the ground up," said Chris Satchell from the Xbox Advanced Technology Group.
"One of the reasons we went with custom hardware design for all our silicon is that it allows us to build security at the silicon level," he told the BBC News website.
"There are going to be levels of security in this box that the hacker community has never seen before."
Part of the motivation behind this is to prevent people from using the 360 to watch pirated films or TV shows.
But Mr Satchell admitted no system was fool-proof and that, with enough time and dedication, the security on the Xbox 360 would be broken.
"There're some really bright people in the world with some really expensive hardware," he said.
"I'm sure sooner or later someone will work out how to circumvent security. But the way we have done the design doesn't mean that it will work on somebody else's machine."

Posts: 42 | Things like this piss me off. I can buy a $25,000 car and do what ever I want to it. I could put in a hamster wheel and the only people pissed off about it is PETA.
But if I buy a $300 game machine I can't make it do what I want it to?
Thats jacked up! |

Thats jacked up! | I would agree if it wasnt for the fact that it has online play. I mean people will only use it to cheat again. O wait they will get an action replay to do that anywayz

Posts: 123 | I love the way they are trying to scare off the hackers by saying protection is built in at the silicone level. So where the hell was it last time then, in the plastic casing?! These guys develop mod CHIPS ya' know...
I can guarantee it will only be a few short months before the XBox 360 is blown wide open. I once remember reading about a company (forget which) that claimed it had come up with a CD that was uncopyable, and had spent tonnes of money in the process. Some kid off the street came along, and held down the shift key to stop the CD booting, and proceeded to copy it.
No matter what they do, there is always somebody who is one step ahead of the game. As protection gets more complex and advanced, so do the tools and techniques that hackers develop. To them, it's a challege, and one they will not fail at. |

You take a stift, mark out the second track, and bingo, your cd works on your pc, car etc and can be copy'ed widout problems It only took them a year or so to develop & a lot of money ...
The good news is, becouse the xbox360 is using standard dvd's, its very possible to read the data on those game dvd's, and use it to find a way in. Unlike the PS3 with it's blu-ray that people wont be able to read ( only the riche who can affored a expensive reader ).
And people like those at SmartXX, i'm betting they are already looking at a way to bridge that TMC chip. It's not build in the cpu, and not in the gpu normally, and sinds it's a third party company that makes the chips, it stands to logic that its a seperate chip. |

Posts: 1,875 | Only a matter of time before it gets hacked. Seriously, there are bragging rights to hacking, and so when M$ states how hard the Xbox 360 is going to be to hack it, it becomes that much more alluring for hackers. If I were M$, I wouldn't say anything about how hard it'll be to hack. Just make it tough as nails and then let the hackers try to figure it out. But, I'd put in an automatitc self-distruct mechanism once security was breached- because I like fires... |

A few people tried that one, by placing hidden shredders in there software. So if people tried to hack it, the software destroys the data. One little problem, no system in the world is 100% perfect. Hardware faults, software faults, and user faults mean one thing. A legit user can also loos its data. And this has heaponed. Some developers got sued for it. While other programs had a bad rep & lots of negative PR becouse of there "protection" in case of hacking. |

Posts: 42 | Well, of course, whether they say that or not, any computer geek or expert can still hack it. But what I heard is that it will take a few years. The Original Xbox took less than 5 months I think.
