Default Picking up my first 360

Hello, I finally decided to pick up a new 360 tomorrow. I am a long time PC gamer, my last console was a Dreamcast so I have been out of the console game for awhile. I started looking at consoles again after playing guitar hero. Please indulge me with a few questions.

Should I buy a cooling unit right away? It will live inside an entertainment center

I have read rumors about a possible price drop but don't feel like waiting since I am going to be on vacation for the next couple of weeks. Are there any B&M retailers that have more than a 30 day price match guarantee?

Is anything else a must buy right away? (besides an extra controller :-) I plan on getting guitar hero and a first person shooter right away I will get Madden 08 and GTA IV when it comes out

Thanks for the input this looks like a great site

First off, the 360 generates a lot of heat. I used to keep it in an entertainment center but I thought better of it after a few months. It was like a furnace when I opened the door of my entertainment center. You don't need an add-on cooling unit if you keep the 360 in a ventilated area.

You won't see a price drop anytime soon. Maybe before the holidays, but I doubt that.

Gears of War and Rainbow Six Vegas are the two major shooters for the 360 right now, with Vegas being light years better IMO.

Welcome to the Site ... Karma killed it with his comments but so long as your 360 is in a well ventilated area you should be good.

MS said there will be no drops any time soon.. theres no need to. the PS3 is barely selling, and the 360 is selling just fine at the current pricepoints. If the PS3 was selling better, then there might be drops, but it isnt, so there isnt.

I agree. I think that any 360 price drop will come as a reaction to a PS3 price drop, to keep the 360 a better value.

Sony has already stated they are talking of a price drop the only thing delaying such is the exact amount they will be dropping which is under discussion. Howard Stringer implied that the price cut for the PS3 should be implemented during this holiday season.

I wouldn't expect a price drop, but I would like to second the recommendation of Gears Of War and Rainbow Six Vegas. Easily two of the best titles on the console, if you're into shooters.

Default Play and Charge?

Thanks for all the quick replies and recommendations. Should I also get the play and charge cable right away? Any opinions on Saints Row? Thanks again

Personally, I have the stand-alone charger and an extra battery. Wires are so 2005. I will not be bound to my console!

I've heard Saints Row is awful, so I haven't had the courage yet to try it.

I enjoyed Saints Row myself so I guess everyone isnt saying it is awful. Ive never actually heard it called awful but Im sure it has. I like GRAW2, so you can check that one out too along with Rainbow Six Vegas and Gears of War.

Meh. I've heard mostly negative about Saint's Row. It's in my rental queue, so when it gets to the point that there are 15 games ahead of it that I really want to play, they will ship Saint's Row instead.

Saints Row is amazing. That's all.

I'd go with a wired controller because my buddy has had considerable lag with his wireless compared to my wired.

As far as games go, get Gears of War if you want short 2-5(going from 1 to 19 rounds) minute rounds in an Arcade style shooter with random one shot kills and some interesting game types or go Vegas for 4 to 20 minute games with strategy and offense and defense game styles with about 10 game types. I personally play both quite a bit.

Wireless controller is fine. Never experienced lag, dont have my 80lb dog tripping on the wire and I sit about 10 ft away from my tv. The IR is great. I have people walk in front of me all the time with no interruption. As far as games, get Guitar Hero first cause thats all you will be playing for at least 2 weeks. I have had it for 2 months and I still LOVE IT!!!!! I do recommend Rainbow and Gears of War, though I do not own Gears. Wish I did. I rented it and loved it just never bought it.

Thanks for all the replies and advice. I am really excited because I was able to snap up an elite! My local Best Buy had 5 of them. I ended up getting guitar hero and a cheap Need for Speed game. I then ordered the wireless online adapter Rainbow Six Vegas looks sweet and will probably be my next purchase after Madden 08.

i didnt like saints row, a game i like with alot of freedom feeling is CRACKDOWN and if u get that u can have the halo 3 beta as well to download. and about nice games, i got over 60 of em now, ghost recon adwanced warfighter 2 is 1 of my favourites, then we got call of duty 2, very fun online, i didnt like Gears of war TBH.. i did the whole game but online am i not a big fan of. then Graw2 is much more fun online. rainbow six vegas is really nice 2. graphics and gameplay rox. if u want a fun crash/racing game for forza motorsport 2, or flatout 3, ultimate carnage. the games i really want to come now is, mass effect, too human, timeshift, fable 2, halo3, assasins creed. and some more :P. but theese games are all awesome!

Yeah buy Crackdown for a beta that has been over for at least 3 weeks now, that makes good sense. Buy Crackdown just because its a fun game. Skip Gears unless your a tool. Buy R6V over Graw2. For racing games Forza is alright if you like customizing, skip Dirt because there is no online play and here in the states FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage doesnt come out until Oct 2nd I believe.

Also the for the person that mentions how well the wireless controllers works with the "IR" being great "even when someone walks in front of me", thats becasue they dont use "IR".
