Posts: 792 | Question about repair center sending me a different 360 than I mailed in. I finally got my message from Repair Center and the Box they are sending me has a different Serial Number than the Box I mailed. Anyone know how this effects your Warranty of if this is more likely a new/refurbished console? How reliable are Refurbished consoles? I could be getting a junker thats broken down 10 times and just taped back together to last me 2 months until my 12 month inclusive warranty expires....and then i'm stuck hoping that when it breaks every 3 months there are 3 red lights... I love my 360 but DAMN i own it 10 months and 2 months of that are down time with no 360 thanks to it being broken or in transit... |

Posts: 828 | Yeah, I have to agree with your concerns. I've completely treasured my xbox 360 since I got it, some 15 months now. Anyway, if it were to die I'd be extremely pissed off because it died to begin with, but more so if MS sent me a different one back. If I received a 100% brand new console, I'd be happy, but I am sceptical of a refurbished unit. I'll explain.
Lets use the example of little Freddie. Little Freddie got a 360 for Xmas and plays it all the time. He constantly eats doritos, and has greasy cheesy hands. He's always touching the disc, and bits of food fall in side the console. Freddie likes to rest his soda on the top of the console, and the small droplets of condensation make its way into the upper part of the hard drive because Freddie has his unit standing up vertically! Now Freddies mum bless her, has had to clean Freddies room and happens to knock over his console while its downloading overnight and thus rattles the disc thats in the drive so when Freddie boots up his console later that day the disc starts to shudder inside the drive and cause more potential damage. Freddie also has to ensure his room stays some what presentable, so freddie has moved his 360 to the cabinet and closed the glass door, essentailly toasting his 360 in the process. So finally Freddie gets the 3 rings of death and sends his, GROTTY, WET, DORITO COVERED, OVERHEATING, MOISTURE IMPACTED, BUSTED DISC DRIVE, 360 into microsoft for Repair.
Little Freddie, bless him gets a brand new 360 later that week because MS ran out of refurb units to give him.
On the other hand, you my friend, wind up with Freddies 360. Now Microsoft opened up Freddies 360 and fixed the 3 red lights by ammending the GPU, they fire it up and it works, so of it goes to you.
However, all the other issues are still potentially looming and that dorito is bound to melt on that motherboard soon enough, and you'll be shipping your repaired console off once more.
Now I know I am being Anal, so please no responses pointing out that MS does thorough checks etc etc. I am just annoyed because its like a 2nd hand car, you never know how well the previous owner looked after the unit, nor what had ever gone wrong with it at all.
Also Elderscroller, you actually have 3 years warranty mate, and even if you bought it at launch, Nov 05, your still covered till Nov 08 anyways.
I feel ya dawg, I would rather have my 360 opened, repaired, and sent back, even if it took way longer, as opposed to someone elses refurb unit.
Hope my story was entertaining!

Posts: 5,094 | Why would MS give you a junker knowing it will break yet again while they foot the bill to repair it again while taking the hit because it's under a new warranty? |

Dude, the amount of people who I know that have received their console back only to find it also dead is like 3 people in my entire circle. It definately happens. Also, as a company, you always do the least amount of warranty work that you can and you certainly try to do the minimum time and cost to get the unit functioning and back out the door to last for the remainder of the warranty period.
I certainly hope most companies bank on not having huge returns, and hte 360 has made MS rethink their position with returns, given the huge rate of them, which is more reason to minimise warranty repair costs. |

Posts: 5,094 | Such a strategy would be the antithesis of business. I agree this may have been the case in the days gone by but I thought the question pertained to the new warranty. Since the announcement and implementation of the extended 3 year warranty MS can no longer afford to repeatedly take additional revenue loss in conjunction with the 1.5 billion they have already served themselves. They need to produce a profit in their gaming division for the first time ever. If one valid criticism could be handed down to MS it would be their inability to make money via gaming. This has been addressed by all corporate heads which leads me to believe MS is no longer playing games (no pun intended). |

Posts: 181 | Little confused. Is the 3 year extended warranty that went into effect begin when you first bought your 360 or when you get it back from the repair shop? Cuz when the warranty went down, my 360 was in the shop because of the RROD.

Posts: 828 | Yes, you are covered even if your warranty is over. Basically evey 360 in the world is covered till Nov 08 in USA, March 09 in Australia and UK (given our consoles launched then), and etc etc for other countries.
Thats the main thing I guess. At least we are all covered for the 3 red rings.
I certainly do hope that MS does hte right thing going forward (which I am sure they will) and can turn a profit before the next Xbox is launched, maybe the 720 edition.

Posts: 828 | Good idea mate. I am thankfull my 360 never failed once in the 18 months of use. I sold it just last week, working perfectly still on ebay. I replaced with a new elite, with new internals and better cooling so it wont red ring it! Get a elite mate, or at least a model made after June 1st 2007 mf date.

Posts: 952 | Refurbished could actually mean 'better' in some circumstances (it's true)...
Consider this - all new consoles are mass manufactured in some sweat shop in Malaysia. Refurbish shops are typically located in western countries and employees are better paid and usually better skilled.
You should be better off. I wouldn't sweat it.
The only thing I would check is the different serial number - apparently this *may* screw up your license on downloaded XBLA games. This can be sorted by contacting Microsoft or may no longer be an issue, not sure. |
